Wizz Air marks a historic milestone, celebrating twenty million passengers at Rome Fiumicino Airport, showcasing growth and sustainability.
Yesterday, Wizz Air, recognized as the most eco-friendly airline in the EMEA region, marked a significant achievement: transporting 20 million passengers through Rome Fiumicino Airport.
In the year 2024, Wizz Air conducted 300,000 flights, with more than 90,000 within Italy and over 30,000 originating from Fiumicino alone. The airline saw a notable 38% year-over-year growth at this hub, serving over 6.5 million travelers. Across Italy, the airline witnessed a 15% increase in passengers, totaling over 18.5 million. Wizz Air, connecting to nearly 90 destinations, continues to fortify its presence in the Italian market, boosting both economic and social growth.
Rome is home to Wizz Air’s primary hub in Italy, where the airline recently inaugurated a new Training Center for its 7,000-plus crew members, operational since October 1, 2024.
Roman residents make up a significant segment of Wizz Air’s clientele, frequently traveling to major cities like London, Madrid, Barcelona, Paris, and Valencia for both work and leisure. These routes enhance the airline’s importance for Rome’s travelers. Moreover, starting at the end of March, Wizz Air will launch a new service to Bilbao and introduce a direct flight from Rome to Zaragoza.
The airline’s influence on employment is profound. In Rome, Wizz Air has generated over 600 direct jobs, reinforcing its impact on the local job market.
Sustainability is a key priority for Wizz Air, which has significantly invested in a modern, low-emission fleet comprising entirely of Airbus A321neo aircraft in Italy. This commitment not only enhances fuel efficiency but also minimizes the environmental impact, underscoring the airline’s dedication to sustainable practices.
The event celebrating the milestone of 20 million passengers featured a special ceremony at Fiumicino Airport, prior to a flight to Vienna. The festivities included special activities for passengers, and the fortunate 20 millionth traveler received a valuable voucher.
