Winter Storm

A powerful winter storm has swept through central and south central Montana, bringing heavy snowfall, icy roads, and travel disruptions across the region. The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) has issued multiple road advisories and closures, with hazardous conditions reported in Livingston, Big Timber, Bozeman, Billings, and Butte.

Major Road Closures and Travel Disruptions

According to MDT, Interstate 90 (I-90) is closed between Bozeman and Park City, and travelers are urged to avoid unnecessary travel. Snow-covered and treacherous road conditions have been reported along:

  • I-90 through Big Timber
  • U.S. 191 towards Harlowton
  • Livingston and surrounding areas

A semi-truck rollover on I-90 eastbound near Missoula has blocked access to a rest area, causing significant delays. MDT has advised motorists to exercise caution, check for detours, and plan extra travel time.

Bozeman Implements Limited Crash Response

Due to hazardous driving conditions, the Bozeman Police Department announced a “limited crash response” policy on their official Facebook page. Until at least 5:00 p.m. on Friday, officers will only respond to crashes involving:

✔ Injuries
✔ DUI investigations
✔ Disabled vehicles blocking traffic

Drivers involved in minor non-injury accidents should exchange information and report incidents later.

Hazardous Conditions Across Montana

In addition to Livingston, Bozeman, and Big Timber, dangerous travel conditions are reported in Butte, Billings, and Great Falls. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Billings has issued winter storm warnings and advisories, cautioning against:

  • Reduced visibility due to blowing snow
  • Slick and icy roads
  • Rapidly changing weather conditions

Travel Safety and Precautions

The Montana Highway Patrol (MHP) and MDT recommend the following for those who must travel:

✔ Check road conditions at MDT’s traveler information portal.
✔ Keep an emergency kit with blankets, food, and water in your vehicle.
✔ Slow down and leave extra space between vehicles.
✔ Avoid travel unless necessary in impacted areas.

With Montana’s winter storm season in full swing, travelers are urged to stay informed, prioritize safety, and monitor official sources for updates.
