Volaris Airlines is celebrating a milestone 15 years at Oakland International Airport (OAK) with a thrilling announcement: the addition of three new destinations in Mexico and increased flight frequencies to popular locations. Starting July 2, 2025, Volaris will launch nonstop service to Zacatecas, marking the airline’s eighth destination from OAK. Zacatecas, the capital of the Mexican state of the same name, joins a growing list of sought-after Mexican cities, including Monterrey and Los Cabos. This expansion brings the total number of nonstop routes between OAK and Mexico to three, offering more options for travelers heading to these vibrant destinations.
The new Zacatecas route will operate three times a week—on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. Tickets are now available for purchase at Volaris.com, giving eager travelers the chance to explore this historical and cultural hub in central Mexico.
OAK: A Convenient Gateway for Bay Area Travelers
Volaris recognizes the strategic importance of OAK as a key gateway for travelers to the San Francisco Bay Area. With its expanded service, Volaris now serves seven destinations in Mexico and one in El Salvador, offering a total of over 70 destinations across Mexico, and extending its international reach to Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Peru, and El Salvador.
A Major Investment in Sustainable Growth
In celebration of its expansion, Volaris is making a substantial investment of over US$200 million in new aircraft stationed at OAK. The airline’s new fleet will consist of A320/A321 NEO airliners, which feature state-of-the-art CFM LEAP engines and winglets that reduce CO2 emissions by 22% per seat and NOx emissions by 55% compared to previous models. These advanced airliners are also much quieter, slashing noise pollution for both passengers and surrounding communities by 50%.
New Nonstop Routes to Los Cabos
A standout highlight from the event was the announcement of daily nonstop flights to Los Cabos, set to begin on March 20, 2025. This highly anticipated route is tailored to the needs of San Francisco Bay Area travelers seeking a beach getaway, with flights specifically timed to accommodate hotel check-in and check-out schedules. As the first nonstop service to this popular leisure destination, the new flights offer a perfect balance of convenience, affordability, and timeliness, especially when combined with Volaris’ competitive fares and the accessibility of OAK.
Strengthening Connections to Monterrey
Volaris also commemorated the expanded service between OAK and Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, now operating three times a week. This route is another key addition to the airline’s Bay Area offerings, solidifying its commitment to connecting more U.S. travelers with the rich culture and business opportunities in northern Mexico.
With these new routes, expanded frequencies, and cutting-edge technology, Volaris is not just celebrating a successful 15 years at OAK but also paving the way for an exciting future of travel to and from the Bay Area.
“We’re very proud of the success of Volaris at OAK. They are OAK’s busiest international carrier, and the second busiest at the airport overall. With the new service added, Volaris becomes the top carrier to Mexico from the San Francisco Bay Area. This success reflects the high level of consumer demand for the convenience of a nonstop from OAK,” said Craig Simon Port of Oakland Director of Aviation. He added, “A well-timed daily nonstop to Los Cabos is a request that we often hear from San Francisco Bay Area vacationers, and we’re thrilled that Volaris will deliver this with the new flight beginning just before Spring Break in 2025.“
It is an absolute honor to be here today to represent the San Francisco Bay Area’s number one airline to Mexico: Volaris.” Said Eric Friedman, Volaris Director of Network Strategy and Airline Partnerships. He added, “We celebrate this status after 15 years of operating the East Bay Way; when Volaris began service to the US for first time between OAK and Mexico. Today, in commemoration of this milestone, our collective history and joint success, I am proud to announce three new routes to Mexico: OAK to Monterrey, Zacatecas and the long-deserved daily flight between Oakland and Cabo San Lucas; Volaris’ first beach destination served from the San Francisco Bay Area.”
