Virgin Australia is soaring ahead in 2025, setting industry benchmarks for reliability and punctuality.

According to January data released by the Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics (BITRE), the airline outperformed major competitors in both on-time performance (OTP) and flight completion rates, reinforcing its position as Australia’s most dependable airline.

Record-Breaking Performance in January

BITRE’s latest Government Aviation Statistics report confirms that Virgin Australia completed 99.2% of scheduled domestic flights in January, significantly exceeding the long-term industry average of 97.8% for Australian domestic airlines.

The airline also posted a departure OTP rate of 78%, surpassing its rivals and nearing the national long-term OTP average of 80.7%.

The exceptional performance continued into February, with departure OTP around 80%, demonstrating Virgin Australia’s strong operational consistency.

A Commitment to Reliability: Virgin’s Winning Formula

Virgin Australia’s Chief Operations Officer, Stuart Aggs, credited the airline’s “SPOT” (Safely Performing On Time) strategy as the driving force behind these achievements.

“Reliability is incredibly important to our guests, especially during peak travel periods,” said Aggs. “Our teams take this responsibility seriously, and it’s fantastic to see their dedication paying off.”

The airline’s operational excellence comes despite weather-related disruptions, including severe summer storms. To minimize passenger inconvenience, Virgin Australia implemented proactive measures, such as:

✅ More aircraft on standby for quick deployment
✅ Additional crew members rostered on reserve
✅ Enhanced operational coordination to handle unexpected disruptions

12 Months of Unrivaled Completion Rates

Virgin Australia has consistently outperformed its major competitor in flight completion rates for the past 12 consecutive months, with December and January 2025 marking the airline’s best performance in two years.

With more than 3.8 million passengers flying Virgin Australia in December and January, the airline saw one of its busiest holiday seasons in history.

A key factor in this surge was Virgin’s re-accommodation of Rex Airlines customers, following Rex’s decision to suspend jet operations in July 2024.

More than 135,000 Rex passengers were rebooked on Virgin Australia services, with over 130,000 already completing their journeys—a move that further strengthened Virgin’s market leadership.

Government-Endorsed Performance Data

The airline’s industry-leading reliability is officially recognized through BITRE’s aviation performance reports, available via the Australian Government’s Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, and Communications website.

With a proven track record of operational efficiency and passenger satisfaction, Virgin Australia is poised to maintain its leadership in 2025, offering seamless travel experiences for corporate and leisure passengers alike.
