twice-daily service

Amtrak revives the Gulf Coast rail line after 30 years, offering twice-daily service connecting New Orleans, key Mississippi spots, and Mobile for travelers.

After a 30-year hiatus, a long-awaited rail connection is set to return to America’s Gulf Coast. Amtrak’s new service will operate twice daily, linking New Orleans, Louisiana, with Mobile, Alabama, and making key stops in Mississippi, including Bay St. Louis, Gulfport, Biloxi, and Pascagoula.

This 145-mile corridor previously served passengers in two brief periods, from 1984 to 1985 and again between 1996 and 1997. Efforts to revive the route began in 2017, and now, with significant funding in place, the project is ready to roll out this spring.

Earlier versions of the train journey took approximately three hours and 25 minutes, offering travelers onboard amenities, including a café lounge. The modern revival aims to enhance connectivity along the Gulf Coast, providing a convenient transportation alternative for both residents and visitors.

Amtrak secured nearly £158 million in federal funding in 2023, allocating up to £140 million toward this rail expansion. The service, tentatively named the “Mardi Gras Service,” highlights the region’s cultural significance, particularly in the cities it connects.

Exploring the Destinations Along the Route

New Orleans, a globally celebrated destination, is famed for its lively music scene, Creole cuisine, and vibrant annual festivals, most notably the iconic Mardi Gras. The historic French Quarter, with its striking Creole architecture and dynamic nightlife along Bourbon Street, remains a major attraction for travelers seeking an authentic Southern experience.

Meanwhile, Mobile, Alabama, boasts a rich cultural landscape with museums, a professional opera, a symphony orchestra, and a flourishing arts scene. The city is home to America’s oldest Mardi Gras celebration, a tradition that dates back to the early 1700s, predating even New Orleans’ famous festivities.

The train’s Mississippi stops also offer unique experiences. Bay St. Louis has been recognized as one of the South’s most picturesque destinations, while Gulfport is well known for its scenic beaches, grand hotels, and bustling casino industry.

Biloxi, a hotspot for gaming and entertainment, features multiple casino resorts with 24-hour gaming, live concerts, and diverse dining options. Pascagoula, renowned for its outdoor recreation and historical charm, has been named one of America’s top small towns for nature lovers.

With its return, Amtrak’s Gulf Coast train promises to revitalize regional travel, connecting major cultural hubs and offering a scenic, convenient alternative for passengers exploring the Southern United States.
