Young Travellers

Recent research reveals that a significant proportion of holidaymakers are venturing abroad without the safety net of travel insurance, exposing themselves to potentially severe financial consequences. Data released by ABTA – The Travel Association shows that approximately one in four travellers who went overseas in the past year neglected to purchase travel insurance. This worrying trend is most pronounced among younger travellers aged twenty-five to thirty-four, where two out of every five individuals admitted to taking at least one trip without insurance coverage.

As the peak holiday season approaches, marked by the busy May half-term, ABTA is raising urgent awareness about the critical importance of comprehensive travel insurance. The association warns that travellers who journey abroad without insurance face the risk of incurring hefty medical bills or repatriation expenses in the event of illness or injury. In extreme cases, these costs can soar into the tens or even hundreds of thousands of pounds, potentially leading to severe financial hardship.

The Cost of Being Uninsured Abroad

Travel insurance acts as a crucial safety net that can cover a wide range of unforeseen events. In 2023, the average travel insurance claim amounted to approximately one thousand seven hundred twenty-four pounds, underscoring how medical emergencies and trip interruptions often involve substantial expenses. Beyond medical treatment, travel insurance can reimburse travellers if they must cancel or cut short their trip due to emergencies such as sudden illness, job loss, or family crises—benefits unavailable to uninsured travellers.

Without travel insurance, any medical treatment received overseas, including hospital stays, surgeries, or emergency evacuations, becomes an out-of-pocket burden. For example, emergency air ambulance services to return a patient home can cost upwards of twenty thousand pounds—costs not covered by free healthcare schemes such as the UK’s Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) or the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).

Why Do Many Travellers Skip Insurance?

ABTA’s study highlights several reasons why travellers choose to forego insurance. The most common justification was a willingness to take the risk, cited by twenty-eight percent of respondents. A quarter of people relying solely on their GHIC or EHIC cards believed these cards offered sufficient protection. Seventeen percent admitted they simply forgot to purchase insurance, while sixteen percent did not consider it a priority or important for their travel plans.

This reveals a troubling lack of understanding about what travel insurance covers versus what government-issued health cards offer. While GHIC and EHIC provide access to state-funded medical care in many European countries, they do not cover private healthcare costs, repatriation, lost belongings, or cancellations—areas where travel insurance provides essential protection.

Young Adults and the Risk-Taking Mindset

The research points to a generational trend: younger travellers are the most likely to gamble with their financial security by travelling without insurance. For many in the twenty-five to thirty-four age bracket, factors such as limited budgets, confidence in their health, or a perception that insurance is an unnecessary expense influence their decision.

However, this age group is not immune to the risks of travel-related emergencies. Adventure activities, new travel destinations, and the unpredictability of overseas medical systems mean that even healthy, experienced travellers can face unexpected costs. Ignoring travel insurance can result in devastating financial consequences that far outweigh the cost of a policy.

ABTA’s Advice for Safer Travel

In response to these findings, ABTA strongly urges all travellers—especially young adults—to secure a comprehensive travel insurance policy immediately after booking their trips. Policies should be tailored to cover planned activities such as water sports, hiking, or skiing, and include protection for any pre-existing health conditions. This proactive approach ensures travellers are protected against both medical emergencies and unforeseen disruptions.

ABTA also emphasizes that possessing a GHIC or EHIC card is valuable but should never be seen as a substitute for travel insurance. While these cards grant access to medically necessary public healthcare within certain countries, they do not provide financial protection or cover all medical scenarios abroad.

Mark Tanzer, ABTA Chief Executive, said:

“A dream holiday can quickly turn into a nightmare if you have an accident or are ill while away and don’t have travel insurance.

“While the vast majority of holidays go ahead without a hitch, every year we hear of people who have an unexpected illness or injury and aren’t covered by insurance, with some even resorting to crowdfunding to cover the cost, which often runs into tens of thousands of pounds.

“That’s why we always advise people to take out a comprehensive travel insurance policy as soon as they book their holiday, so they have peace of mind knowing they’re covered if they need it.”

Sarah Taylor, Director of Consular and Crisis at the FCDO, said:

“Every day, our consular teams see firsthand the distress and financial hardship caused when people face emergencies overseas without adequate insurance.

“Travel insurance is not just an optional extra – it’s a vital safeguard for Brits travelling abroad.”

Travel insurance remains a vital component of responsible trip planning, offering peace of mind and financial security for holidaymakers of all ages. As travel volumes increase during peak periods like the May half-term, understanding and respecting the risks associated with uninsured travel is more important than ever. Young travellers, in particular, are encouraged to reconsider their approach and prioritize obtaining robust insurance coverage before embarking on their journeys.

Choosing to travel uninsured is a gamble with potentially ruinous costs. The relatively small price of insurance pales in comparison to the financial and emotional burden of handling emergencies abroad without support. Comprehensive travel insurance ensures that, no matter what happens, travellers can enjoy their adventures with confidence and protection.
