The return of former President Donald Trump to the White House is already generating significant economic and tourism benefits for Palm Beach County, where Mar-a-Lago serves as his primary residence. Experts and local leaders are calling it the “Trump Bump,” as the region experiences a surge in hotel occupancy, business activity, and visitor spending.

A Tourism Boom Fueled by Presidential Visits

According to Discover The Palm Beaches, Palm Beach County’s destination marketing organization, President Trump’s frequent visits during his previous term brought national and international attention to the area. Milton Segarra, CEO of Discover The Palm Beaches, noted: “Live broadcasts from reporters showcase our sunny skies, tropical palm trees, and waterfronts, providing invaluable exposure for our destination.”

Historical data supports this claim. Hotel tax collections in the county nearly doubled over the past decade, increasing from $33.4 million in 2014 ($44.5 million in 2025 dollars) to $86.7 million in 2024, according to the Palm Beach County Tourist Development Council.

Occupancy rates in Palm Beach County hotels are also climbing. Florida Atlantic University (FAU) professor and hospitality expert Peter Ricci highlighted that hotel rooms were 65% occupied in October 2024, nearly matching levels in Broward and Miami-Dade counties despite lacking major events like Taylor Swift’s concert series.

Economic Impacts Beyond Tourism

The Trump administration’s presence is also attracting high-profile business leaders. Kelly Smallridge, CEO of the Business Development Board of Palm Beach County, attributes a wave of business relocations to Trump-era tax policies, which discouraged state and local tax deductions.

“We’re seeing more multi-billion-dollar businesspeople visiting Mar-a-Lago to discuss roles in the next administration,” Smallridge said. This influx boosts local spending, with visitors frequenting high-end restaurants, luxury shops, and hotels.

Smallridge noted that such exposure is worth more than any marketing campaign: “Every business relocation in our county starts with a visit, and the limelight is already having a spillover effect.”

Challenges and Sustainability

As Palm Beach County thrives, officials are studying the broader impact of hosting a sitting president. Emanuel Perry, Executive Director of the Palm Beach County Tourist Development Council, announced plans to commission a study to quantify the economic and logistical effects of a president living in the area.

FAU’s Ricci cautioned against potential downsides, including traffic congestion and rising airfare costs, noting, “We need to address these challenges positively to ensure Palm Beach remains a premier destination.”

Future Growth

With President Trump expected to visit Mar-a-Lago frequently during his presidency, local officials anticipate sustained growth. Discover The Palm Beaches predicts that live broadcasts and media coverage will continue to showcase the region’s appeal, enticing both tourists and businesses.
