Managers from Thameslink and Great Northern’s infrastructure team rolled up their sleeves for a hands-on team awayday, revamping the green spaces at New Southgate and Potters Bar stations. The initiative aimed to improve the station environments, benefiting local passengers and the surrounding community.

The project focused on cleaning up and transforming overgrown areas, clearing litter, and creating fresh, vibrant spaces for passengers to enjoy. The teams worked tirelessly to rejuvenate these green zones, creating a more pleasant and welcoming atmosphere for commuters.

New Southgate Station Gets a Fresh Look

At New Southgate’s Regal Park entrance, the team embarked on a major cleanup, removing three tonnes of waste, which involved 80 trips between the van and the site to transport materials and tools. Once the area was cleared, the team planted a variety of trees and shrubs, including 19 Bay trees, 14 Rotund Folias, and seven Japanese Azaleas.

The transformation also involved significant groundwork, using eight 50-litre bags of manure, two bags of compost, six tonnes of gravel, and one tonne of topsoil to improve the soil quality.

Andrew Sidgwick, Business Development Manager at Thameslink, who led the effort at New Southgate, expressed his satisfaction with the outcome, stating, “Our teams are committed to projects that reflect our company values and improve the experience for passengers. I’m proud of the work we’ve done in such a short time, and it was heartening to hear positive feedback from station users and the local community.”

Potters Bar Memorial Garden Gets Spring Makeover

Meanwhile, Raj Patel, Head of Access & Regulatory, took the lead in giving the Potters Bar Memorial Garden a spring refresh. The team focused on trimming and pruning plants to prepare the garden for the season ahead. Patel said, “It’s rewarding to get out and do something tangible for the community. While we oversee numerous projects, it’s special to get involved personally and see the immediate impact of our work.”

Community Engagement and Environmental Benefits

These green space revamp projects are not only about beautifying the stations but also about giving back to the local communities. The newly landscaped areas provide passengers with a more pleasant environment as they commute, offering spaces to relax and enjoy the outdoors. The efforts also align with environmental goals, contributing to biodiversity and sustainability in the local area.

Both teams, by taking ownership of these transformation projects, have demonstrated how infrastructure teams can contribute to improving the passenger experience and strengthening their connection with the community they serve.

The efforts at New Southgate and Potters Bar are just a part of the ongoing commitment by Thameslink and Great Northern to provide high-quality services and enhance the stations for passengers.

These projects also highlight the importance of teamwork and collaboration in delivering results that benefit local communities and the environment.
