The much-anticipated Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system for foreign tourists entering Thailand has been delayed, according to an announcement made by the Foreign Ministry on Monday. Initially scheduled for a December 2024 launch, the roll-out date remains uncertain as further coordination with relevant agencies is required.

The ETA system aims to simplify and modernize immigration procedures for travelers. It will allow tourists from 93 visa-exempt countries to register online prior to their trip, receiving a QR code to facilitate fast-tracked entry through automated immigration gates. Once fully implemented, the ETA system will be integrated into Thailand’s broader shift toward an electronic visa system.

The extensive list of 93 countries and territories includes nations from all around the globe. From Europe, countries such as Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom are included. Asian countries like China, Japan, South Korea, India, Malaysia, Singapore, and Vietnam also feature prominently. Other countries on the list encompass Australia, Canada, the United States, Brazil, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and many more, reflecting Thailand’s commitment to welcoming a diverse range of international visitors.

Thailand’s natural beauty, rich historical sites, and renowned hospitality continue to attract millions of tourists each year. In 2023, over 28 million international tourists visited Thailand, according to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports. The top nationalities were Malaysia (4.5 million), China (3.5 million), South Korea (1.7 million), India (1.6 million), and Russia (1.5 million).

Tourism remains one of Thailand’s most significant economic contributors, directly boosting the country’s GDP and employing millions of people. The Foreign Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to launching the system but emphasized the need to ensure thorough preparations with other governmental bodies to ensure a seamless introduction.

Travellers planning visits to Thailand are advised to stay updated through official communications from the Foreign Ministry and Immigration Bureau regarding any further announcements on the ETA launch.
