TAP Air Portugal is set to operate 100 routes across 89 airports worldwide in the first half of 2025, reinforcing its position as a leading carrier connecting Europe with destinations across the globe.
This extensive network includes 13 airports in Brazil, underscoring the airline’s commitment to strengthening ties between Portugal and South America.
Operational Capacity and Market Position
According to data from Cirium, TAP Air Portugal will offer over 10 million two-way seats during this period, marking a 2% increase compared to the same timeframe in 2024, though still 5% below the levels seen in the first half of 2019. This capacity positions TAP as the 21st-largest carrier serving Europe by available seats.
Within Portugal, TAP holds a significant market share, commanding 44% of domestic capacity, 26% of international capacity, and 54% of long-haul capacity. It’s important to note that many long-haul passengers connect through various hubs, which can influence these figures.
Fleet Composition
As of January 2025, TAP Air Portugal operates a fleet of 101 aircraft with an average age of 10.3 years. The fleet comprises:
30 Airbus A320ceo/neo
26 Airbus A321ceo/neo/LR
22 Airbus A330ceo/neo
12 Embraer E190-E1
7 Embraer E195-E1
The regional jets are operated by Portugália Airlines under the TAP Express brand, while the remaining aircraft serve the mainline operations.
Global Reach and Focus on Brazil
TAP’s network spans 32 countries, with a notable emphasis on Brazil, where it serves 13 airports—the highest number in any single country.
This focus is highlighted by the reintroduction of services to Porto Alegre in 2025 and the addition of new destinations such as Florianópolis and Manaus in late 2024.
In Europe, TAP serves 50 airports, with Spain (12 airports) and the United States (8 airports) following Brazil in the number of destinations.
The airline’s primary hub is Lisbon, from which it operates flights to 88 destinations, while Porto serves as a secondary hub with connections to 12 destinations.
Recent and Upcoming Route Additions
TAP continues to expand its network with the introduction of several new routes:
Florianópolis: Launched on September 3, 2024, with three weekly flights, marking a new addition to TAP’s Brazilian destinations.
Manaus: Commenced on November 4, 2024, with three weekly flights operating via Belém, reinstating service to Manaus, which was previously served non-stop until 2016.
Johannesburg: Resumed on December 17, 2024, with direct flights, reestablishing a route last served regularly in 2011.
Porto Alegre: Set to restart on April 1, 2025, with three weekly flights, following a suspension in May 2024 due to regional flooding.
Los Angeles: Scheduled to begin on May 16, 2025, with four weekly flights, reintroducing a service last operated via Terceira in 1990.
Additionally, TAP plans to launch a weekly Lisbon-Terceira-San Francisco service on June 3, 2025, further expanding its transatlantic offerings.
Domestic Operations
Domestically, TAP operates seven routes, with Lisbon-Porto being the most prominent.
The airline offers 63 weekly flights on this 275-kilometer route, maintaining its position as the sole carrier on this segment since Ryanair ceased operations there in 2019.
Strategic Outlook
TAP Air Portugal’s strategic expansion and fleet modernization efforts underscore its commitment to enhancing connectivity between Portugal and key global markets.
By focusing on both established and emerging destinations, particularly in Brazil and the United States, TAP aims to cater to diverse passenger needs while contributing to the growth of Portugal’s aviation sector.
