Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN) is set to inaugurate its new domestic passenger terminal, T3, on April 30, 2025, marking a significant milestone in Vietnam’s aviation infrastructure.
The launch coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification, a key national event.
According to Vietnam’s Ministry of Transport (MT) and Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV), Terminal T3 is expected to alleviate congestion at the country’s busiest airport and enhance domestic flight capacity. The facility, which has been under construction since December 2022, represents a VND 11 trillion ($431.2 million USD) investment in Vietnam’s growing aviation sector.
Enhanced Capacity & Operations at Terminal T3
Terminal T3 is designed to handle 20 million passengers per year, significantly easing the overcrowding issue at Tan Son Nhat Airport. The new terminal includes:
- A modern passenger terminal with state-of-the-art facilities.
- A multi-story parking structure integrated with non-aviation services.
- A terminal frontage elevated road system to improve traffic flow.
- Expanded aircraft aprons to accommodate more flights.
Ahead of the official inauguration, the airport will conduct trial operations, ensuring systems, passenger services, and staff training are in place. This phased approach aligns with the Vietnam Airports Corporation’s (ACV) guidelines for infrastructure expansion and service improvements.
Airline Operations & Transition Plan
Per Tan Son Nhat International Airport’s operational plan, two major domestic airlines – Vietnam Airlines (national carrier) and Vietjet Air (budget airline) – will be the first to operate from Terminal T3. Other domestic carriers, including Vasco, Bamboo Airways, Vietravel Airlines, and Pacific Airlines, will continue to operate from Terminal T1 for the time being.
Official operations at T3 will commence after the peak holiday period of April 30 – May 1, ensuring a smooth transition for travelers. The airport has implemented a comprehensive communication strategy to inform passengers about the new check-in procedures and boarding areas.
Addressing Overcrowding & Vietnam’s Aviation Growth
With passenger traffic increasing annually, Vietnam’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAAV) has prioritized airport infrastructure expansion to accommodate the nation’s booming tourism and economic growth. Tan Son Nhat Airport, originally designed for 25 million passengers per year, has been handling nearly 40 million passengers annually, leading to significant congestion.
The addition of Terminal T3 is expected to:
- Improve passenger flow and reduce waiting times.
- Enhance Vietnam’s domestic aviation network, supporting growing air travel demand.
- Boost tourism and economic connectivity between major cities.
The government has emphasized that aviation infrastructure development is crucial for Vietnam’s long-term economic strategy, with ongoing projects such as the Long Thanh International Airport, expected to become the country’s largest aviation hub.
Aviation Upgrades for a Growing Economy
Vietnam’s Ministry of Transport (mt.gov.vn) and Vietnam Airports Corporation (vietnamairport.vn) continue to oversee large-scale airport developments to meet rising demand. Tan Son Nhat’s Terminal T3 is a key step in modernizing Vietnam’s aviation sector, ensuring a more efficient and seamless travel experience for millions of passengers.
