Sydney’s iconic seaplane aviation legacy is soaring into a new era, with renowned hotel and hospitality entrepreneur Dr Jerry Schwartz securing majority ownership of Sydney Seaplanes. The company, known for its scenic charter flights from Rose Bay, is set for significant expansion under his leadership.

Through this acquisition, the Schwartz Family Company (SFC) now holds the majority stake in Sydney Seaplanes, with plans to assume full ownership by mid-year. This transition will be finalized as Dr Schwartz completes the purchase of shares from previous owners Aaron Shaw and Ken Gaunt.

The deal also encompasses the Rose Bay headquarters of Sydney Seaplanes and the adjacent Empire Lounge, a popular waterfront restaurant, bar, and function venue. The venue will undergo a rebranding to become the Sydney Seaplanes Lounge, enhancing its connection to the aviation experience.

Sydney Seaplanes currently operates a fleet of three aircraft, soon expanding to four, with plans to introduce a fifth by year’s end. The fleet comprises two Amphibious Cessna Caravans and a de Havilland DHC-2 Beaver—both recognized for their safety and reliability. Additionally, Dr Schwartz’s privately owned DHC-2 Beaver is being equipped with amphibious floats and will soon be integrated into the fleet.

The Cessna Caravans, forming the backbone of operations, can accommodate up to 12 passengers in air-conditioned comfort, while their turboprop engines make them the quietest commercial seaplanes available. The legendary de Havilland DHC-2 Beaver, originally designed for Canada’s rugged wilderness, has proven to be an exceptional aircraft for water-based aviation.

Commenting on the acquisition, Dr Schwartz highlighted the deep-rooted history of seaplane aviation in Sydney, emphasizing its unique appeal. With his extensive portfolio in hotels and hospitality, he sees vast potential to elevate Sydney Seaplanes into a premier experience, blending aviation with world-class tourism offerings.

“My purchase of Sydney Seaplanes represents an exciting new chapter in Sydney’s aviation and tourism history,” said Dr Schwartz.

“Rose Bay was the arrival point for the famous Qantas flying boats that opened up the ‘Kangaroo Route’ back in 1938, and I’m proud that we can con continue the seaplane tradition by providing inspirational tours of Sydney Harbour and flights to picturesque locations along the coast.

“Just as anyone arriving on the massive seaplanes decades ago never could forget their arrival into Sydney, we want to ensure that every passenger has an unforgettable flight experience with us.

“Back in the 1930s, arriving by seaplane in Sydney was the ultimate in luxe travel. We are reliving that by offering indulgent packages in combination with the Sydney Seaplanes Lounge, which has one of the most enviable waterfront locations in Sydney.

“Diners can feast on the freshest seafood and enjoy Champagne and cocktails before or after their flight. Wedding couples can literally fly off into the sunset after a wedding reception at the venue.  Besides being an outstanding location for dining and drinks, we will be making it a premium venue for prestigious events and functions.”

With the debut of Sydney Seaplanes Lounge comes the arrival of an exceptional new Head Chef, Natali Mikailoğlu, whose vibrant culinary journey mirrors the dynamic spirit of the venue.

Driven by a deep passion for food and travel, Mikailoğlu has explored diverse gastronomic landscapes, shaping her distinctive approach to modern Australian cuisine. Her impressive career includes roles at renowned establishments such as The Boathouse Group, Rockpool, and Merivale, where she refined her skills and creative vision.

Under Chef Natali’s leadership, Sydney Seaplanes Lounge will spotlight fresh, seasonal ingredients, with a strong emphasis on locally sourced seafood, delivering an elevated dining experience.
