Sabah is leveraging the potential of sports and adventure tourism to further diversify its tourism industry, according to Datuk Christina Liew, the Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Environment. Speaking at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), Liew highlighted initiatives like Xplore Sabah, which is set to take place from October 11-13, 2024, as significant contributors to Sabah’s economic growth.

“These initiatives will attract a new demographic of active travelers, positioning Sabah as a top destination for adventure tourism globally,” Liew stated during the press event.

Xplore Sabah will showcase products and services related to outdoor activities, travel, wellness, and fitness, while also engaging local and international schools to promote sports and games among the youth. These programs aim to nurture future athletes and foster a robust sports culture within the region.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Xplore Sabah and six major partners, including Padang Kontena, Kota Kinabalu Basketball Association (KKBA), Waterfly Borneo, Kinabalu International School (KIS), Association of International Malaysian Schools (AIMS), and the Kota Kinabalu Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KKCCCI). This agreement sets the stage for further collaboration in hosting sporting events under the Xplore Sabah initiative.

The signing ceremony was attended by various officials, including Mary Malangking, the Ministry’s Deputy Permanent Secretary, and Datuk Dr. Rosmawati Lasuki, CEO of the Sabah International Convention Centre.
