South Korea expects a 29% jump in Lunar New Year travel, with 34 million people set to journey domestically and abroad during the extended holiday.

An estimated 34 million individuals are set to embark on domestic and international journeys during the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday, according to projections released on Tuesday by a state-run research institute.

The Korea Transport Institute anticipates that 34.84 million people will travel during the six-day holiday window, spanning Saturday to the following Thursday. This marks a 29% surge compared to last year’s Lunar New Year, which covered a shorter five-day period.

The busiest travel day is expected to fall on Tuesday, with a forecast of 6.01 million people on the move. Highway traffic on the same day is projected to peak at 6.39 million vehicles.

Despite the overall increase in travelers, the daily average highway traffic is predicted to drop by 7.7%, settling at 5.02 million vehicles, as the extended holiday allows travel demand to be more evenly distributed.

To ensure a smooth travel experience, the government has outlined special measures. These include opening emergency lanes on key highways and boosting the availability of public transportation options.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport has designated a 10-day special transportation period, from Friday through February 2, to enhance safety and convenience for holiday travelers.
