South African Tourism has reaffirmed its commitment to the Indian travel market by announcing the return of its India Roadshow in 2025. The event, scheduled to take place from March 18 to March 20, will span three major cities—Delhi, Chennai, and Mumbai. As a key platform for fostering stronger trade relations between the two countries, this annual engagement initiative aims to boost tourism arrivals and expand business opportunities between Indian stakeholders and South Africa’s tourism sector.
With India recognized as one of South Africa’s priority tourism markets, the roadshow is expected to create a direct channel for industry leaders, travel agents, and buyers to explore new collaborations. This year’s event will mark the 21st edition of the roadshow, presenting a revamped strategic direction, reflecting the evolving preferences of Indian travelers, and addressing new opportunities in tourism.
Showcasing South Africa’s New Offerings: A Business-Driven Approach
This year, over 40 South African exhibitors will participate, including nine SMEs. The inclusion of small and medium-sized enterprises highlights South Africa’s commitment to business inclusivity and market diversification, ensuring that a wide range of travel experiences are promoted. Additionally, more than 15% of exhibitors will introduce new products and tourism offerings, enriching the variety of experiences available for Indian travelers.
The roadshow will be led by Gcobani Mancotywa, Regional General Manager for Asia, Australasia, and the Middle East, South African Tourism, who has emphasized the growing influence of India as a market. He noted that the previous edition in 2024 resulted in over 12,000 trade meetings, leading to the generation of more than 160,000 immediate leads, a reflection of the strong demand for South African tourism among Indian travelers.
Strong Momentum for Indian Arrivals to South Africa
In 2024, South Africa welcomed 75,541 tourists from India, marking a 79% recovery from pre-pandemic levels. With a targeted 16% increase in arrivals for 2025, the roadshow will focus on further deepening engagement with Indian trade buyers and equipping them with insights that can enhance South Africa’s tourism appeal.
Mr. Mancotywa has emphasized that India remains a critical market for South Africa, not only in terms of leisure tourism but also in business travel, MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions), and long-term trade partnerships. He has highlighted that Indian visitors are showing growing interest in adventure tourism, luxury experiences, and family-oriented travel, prompting the tourism board to focus its promotional efforts on these segments.
Strengthening Bilateral Travel Ties and Simplifying Accessibility
South African Tourism has also acknowledged the importance of facilitating seamless travel for Indian tourists, particularly in visa processing and flight connectivity. Recognizing the need for a more hassle-free travel experience, Minister of Tourism Patricia de Lille recently announced the introduction of an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system that is expected to streamline visa applications for Indian travelers.
Further supporting group travel, the Trusted Tour Operator Scheme (TTOS) portal is now live, enabling faster processing of group visas. These initiatives reflect South Africa’s commitment to making entry more convenient for Indian visitors, allowing for smoother movement across borders.
Additionally, discussions are ongoing regarding the potential establishment of direct flight routes between India and South Africa, which, if materialized, would significantly enhance connectivity and encourage a greater influx of Indian tourists. The absence of direct flights has often been cited as a challenge, and resolving this could further boost visitor numbers and encourage more business engagements between the two nations.
Evolving Travel Trends: Meeting the Preferences of the Indian Market
The travel preferences of Indian visitors to South Africa have undergone noticeable shifts. The most significant developments include:
- A rise in family travel: More Indian families are opting for South Africa as a vacation destination, particularly for wildlife safaris, adventure experiences, and luxury stays.
- A growing interest in the MICE segment: Business travelers, including those attending corporate events and incentive programs, form a significant part of the market. MICE visitors alone accounted for 20.2% of Indian travelers to South Africa, while business travelers overall made up 29.4%.
- A shift in traveler demographics: There has been a rise in Indian tourists aged over 40, suggesting that the market is expanding beyond younger travelers to include experienced globetrotters seeking immersive, high-value experiences.
As a response, South African Tourism has positioned its 2025 strategy to align with these evolving trends, ensuring that adventure tourism, luxury travel, and business-oriented experiences remain at the forefront of its promotional campaigns.
The Global Impact of South Africa’s Tourism Revival
The resurgence of South African tourism in India extends beyond bilateral ties, influencing global travel trends in multiple ways. As South Africa assumes the G20 Presidency in 2025, the country is actively working to strengthen international tourism alliances, promote sustainable travel practices, and enhance cross-border collaboration.
By facilitating easier access for Indian travelers, the tourism board aims to position South Africa as a preferred destination not only for Indian tourists but for global visitors looking for high-quality, diverse experiences. As the country develops its international tourism strategy, its approach to engaging India could serve as a blueprint for engaging other emerging travel markets across Asia.
Additionally, with India’s outbound travel market expected to grow rapidly, South Africa’s proactive engagement with Indian stakeholders ensures that it remains competitive amid increasing global tourism options. By offering new travel experiences, simplifying visa processing, and potentially improving flight connectivity, the country is making long-term investments in the Indian market that could yield sustained growth in arrivals over the coming years.
Looking Ahead: South Africa’s Commitment to the Indian Market
With the India Roadshow 2025 serving as a major milestone, South African Tourism has reinforced its long-term vision for the Indian travel market. The event will not only highlight new products and business opportunities but also deepen the relationship between Indian travel trade partners and South Africa’s tourism sector.
By leveraging innovative campaigns such as the ‘More & More’ brand initiative, South Africa continues to diversify its marketing efforts, making the destination more appealing to Indian tourists across different segments. As accessibility improves and traveler preferences shift toward adventure, luxury, and business travel, the next phase of growth will be shaped by how effectively the tourism industry adapts to these evolving demands.
With a strong economic and cultural connection between the two countries, South African Tourism’s efforts to strengthen ties with Indian travelers will remain a key priority in 2025 and beyond.
