Slovakia Launches Major Rail Overhaul with Battery-Electric and High-Speed Train Orders

Slovakia is accelerating its shift toward cleaner and more efficient rail transport with a bold two-part investment in new train fleets. In the first phase, national rail operator Železničná spoločnosť Slovensko (ŽSSK) secured 16 battery-electric trains valued at $146.88 million, with an option for 20 additional units. These trains, designed to replace diesel models on partially electrified lines, will come with eight-year battery warranties—ensuring long-term reliability and reduced environmental impact.

Eco-Friendly Travel Takes the Spotlight

The battery-electric units are expected to significantly reduce emissions and operating costs across Slovakia’s regional rail network. By targeting routes lacking full electrification, ŽSSK is offering a sustainable and practical alternative for environmentally conscious passengers.

Second Tender Focuses on Speed and Cross-Border Compatibility

In a parallel initiative, ŽSSK has ordered eight high-speed, multi-system trains capable of reaching 200 km/h and accommodating up to 550 passengers. With an option to procure seven more, this fleet is designed for both domestic and international service, compatible with 3 kV DC and 15–25 kV AC power networks. These trains will also feature the European Train Control System (ETCS), enhancing operational safety and interoperability.

EU Funding Powers a Greener Future

Supported by $696.60 million in funding from the European Union, including maintenance coverage, this initiative underscores Slovakia’s commitment to modernizing its rail infrastructure in alignment with EU climate goals. The first deliveries are expected within the next few years, coinciding with national transportation milestones and EU funding schedules.

A Leap Toward Modern, Reliable Rail Service

ŽSSK’s strategic fleet renewal is set to improve passenger experiences through cleaner, faster, and more dependable rail services. With fewer delays and upgraded onboard amenities, the rail operator is poised to elevate the country’s transportation standards.
