Six Senses

Six Senses has attained the premier level of certification from Control Union, an organization recognized by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council. This achievement follows a rigorous evaluation by Control Union that scrutinized Six Senses’ strategic approach to sustainability, their initiatives to mitigate environmental impacts, their enhancement of cultural heritage, and their efforts to boost social and economic advantages for local communities.

Jeff Smith, Six Senses Vice President of Sustainability, shares“GSTC Certification is a mark of trust and credibility in sustainability. While this certification is issued globally, it marks a proud moment for our individual Six Senses properties included in this certification and their sustainability teams, who work proactively to provide uncompromising hospitality, environmentally cognizant operations, an outstanding guest experience, and high levels of engagement among colleagues and the local community.”

The GSTC Certification stands as a reputable mark of sustainable practices within the travel and tourism sector, combating the prevalence of “greenwashing” in hospitality. This certification process, requiring detailed third-party audits of hotel operations and management systems, confirms the validity of sustainability claims by demanding quantifiable and consistent actions. Certifications are issued for three years, encouraging ongoing enhancement and accountability.

Jeff adds: “Sustainability is ingrained in the Six Senses culture and has been from the very beginning in 1995. It is an important component of every decision we make – from the way we run our hotels, to how we design their architecture and interiors, the amenities and supplies found within them, and our pursuit for Plastic Freedom, through to the impact we have on the local communities and ecosystems, and the legacy we leave with guests.”

Transforming standards into results

The GSTC Criteria assess sustainable methods in four principal domains: strategic sustainability efforts, minimizing environmental detriments, enriching cultural heritage, and amplifying local socio-economic benefits.

Each Six Senses hotel is guided by a dedicated Sustainability Director who champions initiatives that contribute positively to the environment. Their Earth Labs are hubs of innovation and education, focusing on projects such as marine conservation, sustainable farming, and renewable energy utilization like solar or biomass, as well as in-house water bottling processes.

Moreover, each resort dedicates a Sustainability Fund amounting to 0.5% of its total revenue from guest reservations to support substantial local initiatives.

Strategic commitments to the planet

In terms of building and design, Six Senses strives for at least a LEED Silver certification for new properties, having achieved LEED Platinum at Six Senses Southern Dunes, The Red Sea—making it the first in Saudi Arabia to secure the highest level of LEED certification—and Six Senses Vana, the inaugural retreat in India to receive this standard. Six Senses Rome also boasts a LEED Gold certification.

Advancing eco-friendly practices

Continuing its commitment to an environmentally friendly future, Six Senses has introduced the Journey to Plastic Freedom Playbook, aiming to eradicate plastic from the hospitality sector. This initiative, starting in the 1990s, has led to the development and dissemination of 82 effective solutions for reducing plastic use across the industry.

Celebrating cultural integration

Whether it’s participating in traditional activities with monks in Bhutan, learning historic Sadu weaving in Saudi Arabia, or engaging in Fijian ceremonies, Six Senses immerses its guests in authentic local experiences, fostering a deeper connection and appreciation for diverse cultures.

Empowering communities

Beyond environmental efforts, Six Senses focuses on social responsibilities and enhancing local economies through practices like employing local staff, sourcing local products, and supporting local businesses and artists. Partnerships with local NGOs, schools, and hospitals help strengthen community services and improve access to essential resources, promoting sustainable community development.

Enhancing IHG’s sustainability commitments

As part of the IHG Hotels & Resorts family, Six Senses plays a pivotal role in the broader Journey to Tomorrow initiative, aiming to make a significant impact on societal and environmental sustainability while delivering exceptional guest experiences.
