SITA, a leading global provider of air transport technology, is set to implement its Smart Path technology at nine airports in India through a strategic partnership with the Airports Authority of India (AAI). This collaboration is part of the broader DigiYatra initiative and represents a significant development in the Indian aviation sector. By introducing SITA’s cutting-edge, contactless boarding pass system, the partnership aims to minimize wait times and enhance the travel experience for passengers while boosting operational efficiency at these airports.

AAI will deploy SITA’s advanced suite of technologies, which includes the SITA Smart Path, Passenger Flow Management (PFM) solution, and Face Pods. These innovations provide biometric solutions at various airport touchpoints, allowing for a contactless and streamlined travel experience across nine Indian airports. This initiative empowers passengers to manage their journeys efficiently while reducing wait times throughout the airport.

This partnership aligns with AAI’s goal of digitalizing Indian airports, in line with the DigiYatra initiative spearheaded by the Indian Ministry of Civil Aviation. DigiYatra aims to revolutionize air travel in India by offering a paperless airport experience through advanced facial recognition technology.

The DigiYatra initiative was officially launched at Visakhapatnam Airport, with the presence of the Hon’ble Union Minister of Civil Aviation, Shri Rammohan Naidu, alongside other dignitaries, including Hon’ble Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Shri Murlidhar Mohol, and Chairman of the Airports Authority of India, Shri M. Suresh. Airports involved in the rollout of SITA technology include those in Visakhapatnam, Ranchi, Bhubaneswar, Indore, Raipur, Bagdogra, Patna, Goa (Dabolim), and Coimbatore.

SITA’s biometric technology will transform the way travelers navigate through Indian airports. Sumesh Patel, President, APAC, SITA said: “With a focus on delivering Digital Travel, improving airport efficiency, and future-proofing operations with smart, agile solutions, India has a unique opportunity to revolutionize its airports with truly world-class infrastructure. It is vital in this connected era that travel across the globe is as seamless as possible, and we are ready to help India continue to innovate in their digitalization efforts with SITA technology as the DigiYatra initiative spreads across India.”

India views DigiYatra as a game-changer for both the aviation sector and society, and through its partnership with SITA, the initiative is expected to set new standards in passenger experience and airport operational efficiency across the nation.

In 2023, more than 20 million passengers utilized DigiYatra, and with plans to expand to 28 additional Indian airports, the program aims to serve around 90% of the country’s domestic travelers. The DigiYatra Foundation is also working towards aligning with IATA’s One ID initiative to ensure global interoperability, further enhancing the seamless travel experience for passengers.

In July 2023, SITA secured a significant agreement with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to deliver technology solutions to 43 major airports in India. This deal will enhance over 2,700 passenger touchpoints, marking one of the largest-scale implementations of passenger processing technology in the world.

SITA has been collaborating with the Indian government since 1952 and continues to support the “Make in India” initiative, expanding its India-based resources in line with the government’s vision for local growth and innovation.
