The “Feel Shanghai: Travel as a Local” World Tourism Day Showcase was held on September 27 at the Liu Haisu Art Museum, organized by the Shanghai Administration of Culture and Tourism and operated by Shanghai Daily. The event aimed to highlight Shanghai’s rich cultural and tourism offerings through the perspective of international residents living in the city.

This initiative invited expatriates to reveal their hidden gems and must-try experiences, offering unique insights for global tourists. The event is part of a broader effort to increase international interest in Shanghai as a top travel destination in China.

Ten international residents from six countries formed nine teams, serving as “local expat guides.” French citywalk guide Clarisse Le Guernic led a vibrant exploration of the city, while celebrity chef Corentin Delcroix showcased the local culinary scene. French graffiti artist Paul Dezio brought the art culture to life, and German entrepreneur Eric Baden brewed excitement around Shanghai’s café culture.

Participants also included Hungarian museum professional Steven Back, who highlighted Shanghai’s ancient towns, Spanish pianist Mario Alonso, who dazzled with performances, and Australian host Cameron Andersen, who promoted sports experiences. Siblings Maya and Anton Wagener introduced “Wonderland,” while Italian kung fu master Kleber Battaglia focused on wellness and martial arts.

The event concluded with the launch of the “Homie Hunt” project, a series of street challenges designed to highlight Shanghai’s cultural and tourism hotspots. This project emphasizes Shanghai’s role as an inclusive, international hub for cultural exchanges.

Shanghai’s inbound tourism has seen significant growth, welcoming over 3 million visitors in the first half of 2024, a 140% increase from the previous year. The city has also introduced over 120 premium tourism routes to further bolster its appeal as a top destination for global travelers.
