São Paulo is enhancing its appeal to Muslim travelers with the Halal Tourism Guide, offering culturally respectful accommodations, attractions, and training for local businesses.

The São Paulo State Department of Tourism and Travel has been working to position the state as a Muslim-friendly destination, encouraging inclusivity and cultural understanding. A year and a half ago, the department launched the Halal Tourism Guide in collaboration with the Federation of Muslim Associations of Brazil (FAMBRAS), marking the beginning of their efforts to welcome Muslim tourists to the region. This initiative seeks to not only highlight the local Islamic culture but also ensure that Muslim visitors, whether from Brazil or abroad, feel welcomed and respected.

The Halal Tourism Guide was developed as part of a broader strategy to enhance the state’s appeal to Muslim travelers. The guide lists key Islamic spaces, such as the Brazil Mosque in São Paulo and the Islamic Center of Jundiaí, while also recommending tourist attractions like Ibirapuera Park, Paranapiacaba, and the Seven Beaches Trail in Ubatuba. These attractions offer a variety of options for Muslim visitors looking for leisure activities that align with their cultural and religious values.

In addition to showcasing these attractions, the guide highlights hotels and restaurants that are either fully adapted or in the process of becoming more Muslim-friendly. Features such as prayer rugs, a direction to Mecca, and the Quran in rooms are provided at hotels catering to Muslim visitors. Likewise, restaurants listed in the guide ensure they offer Halal food options. Though some establishments are still in the adaptation phase, all have been made aware of the importance of catering to Muslim needs.

The state has gone a step further by offering specialized halal training for the hospitality sector, in collaboration with FAMBRAS’s Halal Academy. This training has extended to municipal governments and tourism professionals, with over a thousand people trained in making Muslim visitors feel at home. The training focuses on hospitality, cultural integration, and minimizing prejudice and stereotypes that may arise. By promoting tourism as a peaceful, inclusive activity, the state aims to showcase the diversity that Brazil, and São Paulo in particular, has to offer.

In addition to these efforts, São Paulo has promoted halal tourism at over 60 fairs and events, further raising awareness and interest in the state’s Muslim-friendly offerings. Although there is no specific target for Muslim visitors, the growing number of inquiries about halal tourism reflects the success of these initiatives. The tourism department is committed to continuing and expanding its efforts in this area, with plans to develop more resources for tourists of various religious backgrounds, including those from Catholic, Jewish, Evangelical, African heritage, and Eastern religions.

Through these initiatives, the São Paulo State Department of Tourism and Travel hopes to create a welcoming environment where all tourists, regardless of religion or ethnicity, can feel respected and embraced. By fostering a sense of inclusion, the state aims to become a top destination for travelers seeking cultural and religious sensitivity.
