Renfe’s international AVE high-speed rail service connecting France and Spain has exceeded one million passengers since its launch in summer 2023. Operating from hubs in Lyon and Marseille, the service links around 15 destinations across both countries and is set to expand with a new route to Toulouse in the second quarter of 2025.

Strengthening High-Speed Rail Connectivity in Europe

The Renfe AVE network currently operates two international high-speed rail routes: Lyon-Barcelona and Marseille-Madrid. These routes partially overlap between Nîmes and Barcelona, where four AVE trains—two in each direction—run daily. The service provides a seamless travel experience for passengers, cutting down travel times while enhancing connectivity between major urban centers.

Key stops along these routes include Montpellier, Nîmes, Narbonne, Perpignan, Figueres, and Girona. The Lyon route serves Valence, while the Marseille route incorporates stops in Avignon and Aix-en-Provence. This extensive connectivity allows for efficient high-speed rail travel between Spain and France, reducing reliance on air and road transport.

Growing Demand for Renfe’s International Rail Services

Renfe’s high-speed services have experienced significant demand, particularly on the Marseille-Madrid corridor, which accounts for 60% of total ridership. The Lyon-Barcelona route remains the most popular for direct travel between the two cities. Other high-traffic connections include Barcelona-Montpellier and Lyon-Montpellier, reflecting strong demand for high-speed rail as a viable alternative to other forms of transportation.

The upcoming Toulouse route, set for launch in 2025, marks another milestone in Renfe’s expansion strategy. Following approval from the European Union Agency for Railways, Renfe began conducting training itineraries in January 2025 to prepare for full service operations. Once operational, this addition will bring Renfe’s total daily AVE services to six, linking 17 cities across France and Spain.

Sustainable Cross-Border Mobility

Renfe’s continued expansion aligns with European Union objectives for enhancing sustainable cross-border transport. Many of the current routes previously required passengers to travel by road or air, making high-speed rail a more eco-friendly alternative. By increasing the accessibility and efficiency of international train travel, Renfe contributes to the development of a European single rail area, promoting seamless connectivity and reducing carbon emissions.

As demand for high-speed rail services continues to rise, Renfe remains committed to improving passenger experience, expanding its network, and strengthening sustainable transport links between Spain and France. With the upcoming Toulouse service, the network will further cement its position as a leading player in European cross-border rail travel, offering passengers faster, greener, and more convenient journeys.
