The tourism department is planning a dedicated ‘Goan Cultural Experience Zone’ within a proposed town square in Porvorim, aiming to offer visitors a taste of Goa’s rich heritage and lifestyle. Officials from the Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) estimate the project will require a budget of approximately Rs 100 crore. Though still in the early stages, the department is preparing to seek funding from the Centre through the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI) scheme. This initiative provides states with long-term, interest-free loans for up to 50 years, facilitating the development of iconic tourist destinations nationwide.

In the coming months, a comprehensive Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the iconic town square will be developed. This proposal took shape following an April 4 meeting with the consultant for Swadesh Darshan Scheme 2.0, Gujarat’s INI Design Studio.

The envisioned town square will feature a vibrant cultural zone, food shacks along Torda Creek and Ekoshe Road, along with other engaging attractions. The tourism department anticipates approval from the Union ministry, as the town square is expected to significantly boost the local economy and generate job opportunities. Funding for selected DPRs will be provided by the Union Ministry of Tourism, with Goa seeking Rs 100 crore from the Rs 2,000 crore allocated under the SASCI scheme for 2024-25. Each state is capped at Rs 250 crore, with Rs 100 crore set as the maximum allocation per project. Under the leadership of Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte, the tourism department has identified Colva and Porvorim as key destinations for development within the Swadesh Darshan Scheme 2.0.
