The Port of San Diego’s solar-powered microgrid at the Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal (TAMT) has been honored with a prestigious recognition by the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA). The AAPA’s annual Lighthouse Awards highlight exceptional programs and projects in the port industry. A distinguished panel of judges reviewed the Port’s 2024 submission and awarded the TAMT microgrid project the Facility and Infrastructure Development Award: Excellence in Studies, Plans, and Designs.
“As we continue to deliver on our promise to advance our clean air goals, we are proud to say that we have many projects like the Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal microgrid that are improving public health and enhancing the way of life for our communities and those who work on and visit our San Diego Bay waterfront,” said Chairman Frank Urtasun, Port of San Diego Board of Port Commissioners. “We are so honored that our work is being recognized by industry professionals and our colleagues at ports across the country.”
Launched in 2016, the TAMT Microgrid – Resiliency in Terminal Operations project was designed to support the redevelopment and electrification of the terminal, transforming it into a modern, clean, and highly efficient facility. This flagship initiative delivers renewable, reliable, and resilient power to enhance operational efficiency at TAMT and help the Port meet its emissions reduction objectives.
The microgrid strengthens the terminal’s resilience by enabling islanding capabilities, allowing key infrastructure to function independently during grid outages. This includes:
- Security infrastructure
- Jet fuel storage facility
- Terminal lighting
- Essential terminal facilities supporting zero emissions
The project was made possible through a grant from the California Energy Commission’s (CEC) Electric Program Investment Charge (EPIC) and the University of San Diego.
