Peru’s tourism industry is surging, with 3.3 million international visitors in 2024, a 29% increase from the previous year. A
s the country looks to sustain this momentum, the much-anticipated opening of the new terminal at Jorge Chávez International Airport (LIM) is set to further enhance Peru’s aviation infrastructure and global connectivity.
The Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (MINCETUR) has identified aviation expansion as a key driver of economic growth, aligning with government efforts to strengthen Peru’s position as a regional hub.
The new terminal, scheduled to open at the end of Q1 2025, will initially accommodate 30 million passengers annually, with future expansion plans targeting a capacity increase to 40 million.
New Terminal to Elevate Peru’s Aviation Industry
Speaking at Routes Americas 2025, Peru’s Vice Minister of Tourism, Madeleine Burns Vidaurrazaga, emphasized the strategic importance of the new terminal in boosting the country’s aviation sector:
“The entire aviation community in the country is committed to successfully completing the operational transition process. The goal is to ensure the full capacity of the new airport infrastructure to support the efficient growth of air service offerings.”
The Peruvian Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) has been actively working on aviation reforms, including airport upgrades and airline incentives, to position Jorge Chávez International Airport as a major transit hub in Latin America.
Expanded International Routes Strengthen Global Connectivity
Peru’s growing role as a regional aviation hub is reflected in its new international flight routes introduced in 2024, including:
Lima (LIM) – Montego Bay, Jamaica (LATAM Airlines Group)
Lima (LIM) – Rosario, Argentina (LATAM Airlines Group)
Lima (LIM) – Istanbul, Turkey (Turkish Airlines, starting June 2025)
With an increase in connecting flights to major South American cities, Lima Airport is solidifying its position as a key transit point for travelers heading to and from Latin America.
Expanding Peru’s Reach to North America, Europe & Asia
Looking ahead, Peru is actively seeking to expand flight services to North American and European markets, with plans to secure access for an Asian airline, further diversifying the country’s aviation network.
To attract new airlines and increase existing services, Peru’s aviation and tourism authorities, in collaboration with airport administrators, are launching an incentive plan designed to make route expansion more attractive.
“Additionally, efforts to promote strategic alliances continue, fostering joint advertising campaigns between the Peruvian government and national and international airlines,” Vidaurrazaga said. “These campaigns aim to enhance domestic and international connectivity while promoting Peru’s tourist destinations through a diversified offering of airfares.”
Government Commitment to Strengthening Tourism & Air Travel
The Peruvian Government has been actively supporting initiatives to boost inbound tourism, in line with the country’s Sustainable Tourism Development Strategy 2030. Key policies include:
Airport infrastructure improvements under the National Aviation Strategy.
Incentives for airlines to introduce new routes and expand services.
Strategic partnerships with airlines and tour operators to increase global visitor numbers.
Promotional campaigns in priority tourism markets, including North America, Europe, and Asia.
According to Peru’s National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), tourism contributes nearly 4% of the country’s GDP, making it a vital sector for economic growth. With enhanced connectivity, world-class airport infrastructure, and a diversified airline network, Peru is on track to further strengthen its position as a premier travel destination.
