Paso de Robles, or “Pass of the Oaks,” has long been a celebrated destination, and at its heart lies the iconic Paso Robles Inn. For over 100 years, this historic landmark has been a welcoming retreat for travelers, political dignitaries, and Hollywood stars alike. Now, after a $25 million renovation, the Inn has been revitalized, blending its timeless charm with modern updates designed to meet the needs of today’s guests.
Originally part of a 25,000-acre Spanish land grant, Paso de Robles became a well-known stop along the Camino Real Trail, famous for its natural mineral hot springs. Founded in 1889, the El Paso De Robles Hotel anchored the town’s main square, offering a Victorian spa experience that attracted both the famous and the infamous, including U.S. presidents, John Wayne, Clark Gable, and the notorious outlaw Jesse James, who famously hid in the hotel’s underground tunnels.
Though a devastating fire in 1940 destroyed much of the original building, the Grand Ballroom survived. By 1942, the Paso Robles Inn was rebuilt using salvaged bricks from the original structure and became a popular stop for mid-century road trippers. As Paso Robles grew into one of California’s premier wine regions, the Inn maintained its status as a beloved local landmark. A major renovation in 1999 restored much of its turn-of-the-century grandeur.
The latest redesign carefully balances the Inn’s historical roots with contemporary style, drawing inspiration from Victorian, Mission-style, and ranch aesthetics. The property now offers 98 California country-style rooms, each with stunning garden views, modern amenities, and elegant touches inspired by the local landscape. Guests can relax by the pool in private cabanas or explore the nearby wineries and natural attractions.
Architectural elements throughout the property pay homage to California’s rich heritage, while the rooms showcase Paso Robles’ winemaking and ranching history. Accommodations range from the romantic 1889 House, with 12 Victorian-era rooms located above the Grand Ballroom, to spacious garden suites and modern studios with private patios or balconies.
Dining at the Paso Robles Inn is just as impressive. The Steakhouse, a local favorite since 1964, continues to serve up premium steaks alongside seasonal dishes like heirloom tomato panzanella, all set against a beautiful garden backdrop. Cattlemen’s Lounge, a lively gathering place since the 1940s, offers a warm, inviting atmosphere with a menu that includes classic burgers, flatbreads, and signature cocktails. For a more casual option, the Coffee Shop serves diner-style favorites, grab-and-go pastries, and locally roasted coffee in a mid-century setting.
With its perfect mix of historic charm and modern luxury, the Paso Robles Inn remains a premier destination in the heart of California’s wine country, continuing its 150-year tradition of hospitality for generations to come.
