Pandavula Gutta, the ancient hill range known for its prehistoric rock paintings, has been recognized by the central government as a geo-heritage site and will soon be developed into a major tourist destination.
Development Plans:
During a site visit, Bhupalpally Collector Rahul Sharma announced that infrastructure improvements will include better roads, parking, and the construction of resorts to cater to tourists. This development aims to create employment opportunities for local youth. In addition to these enhancements, special tourist packages will be designed to attract visitors not only from Telangana but also from across India. These packages will include trekking, guided tours, and cultural activities.
Past Efforts:
Earlier, former Collector Amrapali Kata promoted Pandavula Gutta by organizing activities like rock climbing and night camping, but interest waned after her transfer. However, the renewed focus on developing the site is expected to revive these initiatives and more.
Historical Significance:
Pandavula Gutta, discovered in 1990 by K Ramakrishna Rao, an official from the Department of Archaeology and Museums, dates back to the Mesolithic era, with rock art estimated to be 4,000–2,500 million years old. The caves feature intricate paintings of humans, animals like bison, antelope, and tigers, along with symbols such as swastikas, circles, and weapons.
Tourism Potential:
This geo-heritage site holds immense potential for cultural, historical, and adventure tourism, with existing activities like trekking and rock climbing already popular. The central government’s recognition has further bolstered efforts to make Pandavula Gutta a must-visit destination.
