Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has successfully obtained Heathrow Airport slots for the summer 2025 season by reaching an agreement with Vietnam Airlines. This strategic move indicates PIA’s ambition to relaunch six weekly flights connecting Karachi and Lahore with London, aiming to reestablish its presence in the UK market.
The airline has faced significant challenges since July 2020, when UK and EU authorities banned its operations due to safety concerns. The decision followed an investigation into a fatal crash in Karachi, which exposed widespread pilot licensing fraud in Pakistan’s aviation sector. As a result, PIA lost its approval to operate within UK and European airspace.
While the European Union has since reinstated PIA’s access—leading to the resumption of flights to Paris on January 10—UK authorities have yet to lift the ban. Presently, British Airways remains the only airline offering direct flights between the UK and Pakistan, specifically to Islamabad. A large proportion of travelers continue to rely on Gulf carriers for connecting flights.
Recent discussions between PIA, the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), and the Department for Transport suggest that negotiations are ongoing regarding the airline’s return. However, a formal approval from British regulators remains pending. TTG has sought further comments from relevant authorities.
PIA’s push to reenter the UK market coincides with Pakistan’s renewed attempt to privatize the airline. A previous effort in October 2024 saw just one bidder—a consortium whose offer fell significantly below expectations. With a second privatization attempt underway, securing key international routes like Heathrow could enhance PIA’s attractiveness to potential investors.
While awaiting UK approval, acquiring Heathrow slots represents a major step in PIA’s efforts to expand its global footprint and rebuild passenger confidence.
