This week, Destination NSW hosted industry events in Los Angeles and New York, where Sensory Tourism Australia, an accessible tourism operator, unveiled its inclusive and accessible offerings tailored for vision-impaired international visitors. These products were introduced to North American travel advisors.
Sensory tourism, an innovative concept, shifts the focus away from traditional sightseeing to offer a unique experience of destinations. It was created by the founders of Cocky Guides, a renowned group tour operator for blind and low-vision travellers, which has been serving Australia since 2018.
Sensory Tourism Australia Director and co-founder James (Buck) McFarlane says, “The travel advisors I have met during these events are really interested in our curated, ‘stay and discover’ packages. They are specifically designed to support blind and low-vision travellers visiting Australia. The travel advisors have not seen anything like this in their international product portfolio. So Australia is leading the way in presenting our destinations in a sensory and tactile way. With more than 8 million blind and low-vision Americans in the USA, there is a great opportunity for travel advisors to expand their accessible travel solutions.”
In collaboration with Destination NSW through their NSW First Program, Sensory Tourism Australia has developed internationally ready products designed to welcome blind and low-vision travelers from abroad. These experiences will take visitors to Sydney and surrounding regions, including the Blue Mountains, Hunter Valley, and Port Stephens.
Alongside their presence at Destination NSW’s events, Sensory Tourism Australia is also an exhibitor and sponsor at the National Federation of the Blind California State Conference, taking place from March 14th to 16th at the DoubleTree Suites by Hilton Hotel Anaheim Resort Convention Center. Here, blind and low-vision Americans will have the opportunity to engage directly with Sensory Tourism Australia.
