Delta Expands Service Between Los Angeles and Papeete, Extending Options for French Polynesia Travelers

Travelers from the US West Coast heading to French Polynesia now have more flight options, as Delta Air Lines extends its seasonal route between Los Angeles (LAX) and Papeete (PPT). Originally scheduled to run until March 2025, the service will now operate through June, catering to increased demand for this popular destination.

Extended Service Period

Delta Air Lines will soon commence its seasonal service connecting Los Angeles International Airport and Faaʻa International Airport in Papeete, the capital of French Polynesia. Initially planned from October 2024 to March 2025, the airline has now extended operations through June 7, 2025.

The extension, first reported by Ishrion Aviation, reflects Delta’s confidence in the high demand for this sunny getaway. The carrier will now operate flights from October 2024 to early June, compared to the original end date of March 27.

Competing in a Crowded Market

Delta will face competition from two other carriers on this route: Air France and Air Tahiti Nui. According to aviation analytics firm Cirium, Delta plans to offer a varied number of return flights each month, with 28 round-trips scheduled for June before concluding the service.

While Delta will deploy its Boeing 767 on the LAX-PPT route, Air France utilizes the Airbus A350, and Air Tahiti Nui flies the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. Air France’s service includes a stopover in Los Angeles on its Paris-Papeete route, while some of Air Tahiti Nui’s flights connect through Papeete en route to Paris and Auckland.

Expanding Connections

French Polynesia, located in the South Pacific Ocean and comprising over 120 islands, is served internationally via Faa’a International Airport. Besides LAX, the airport offers nonstop connections to Seattle and San Francisco. It also provides flights to destinations like Honolulu, Bora Bora, and Auckland.

Delta’s Broader Network Growth

Delta’s expansion in Papeete is part of a broader strategy to increase its network. The airline has recently announced new routes and added frequencies from its Boston hub, focusing on the spring break and Patriots’ Day holiday period in 2025. New weekend-only destinations include Myrtle Beach and Pensacola, while existing routes to Orlando, Tampa, and Phoenix will see increased service.

Delta is also set to embark on its largest-ever transatlantic expansion, introducing new routes to cities such as Naples, Brussels, and Catania from its US hubs, further strengthening its international presence.
