Tourism Research Australia (TRA) has unveiled the latest findings from the National Visitor Survey (NVS) and International Visitor Survey (IVS) for the year ending June 2024.

These surveys track the travel patterns of both Australian residents and international tourists within and to Australia. They serve as a reliable, nationally standardized source of data for the tourism sector, offering valuable insights for policymakers about the economic impact of tourism at both the state and regional levels.

Key Insights:
As of June 2024, New South Wales (NSW) welcomed 101.6 million visitors from both domestic and international markets, setting a new spending record of $52.9 billion within the state. Visitors spent a cumulative total of 216.0 million nights in NSW. Despite a 3.6% drop in overall visitor numbers compared to the previous year, the state saw a decline in domestic day visits by 8.7%, totaling 60.8 million.

In contrast, the number of overnight stays showed positive growth. Domestic overnight stays increased by 2.6%, reaching 37.1 million visitors, while international overnight stays surged by 35.6% to 3.7 million visitors, approaching 85% of the levels seen before the pandemic in June 2019.

The total expenditure of $52.9 billion represents a 9% increase from the previous year and marks the highest amount recorded since 1998. International tourists alone spent a record $12.2 billion, up 41.9%. Domestic overnight visitors contributed $30.7 billion, a 1.5% increase, and day visitors spent $10.0 billion, up 3.1%.

NSW and its capital, Sydney, maintain their status as the premier destinations in Australia, leading in terms of visitor numbers, overnight stays, and total spending.

Domestic overnight visitors accounted for 37.1 million, a 2.6% increase, spending $30.7 billion (up 1.5%) and lodging for 117.0 million nights (up 1.8%).

The number of domestic day visitors fell to 60.8 million, a decrease of 8.7%, though their spending rose by 3.1% to reach $10.0 billion.

International visitors grew to 3.7 million, up 35.6%, with spending up 41.9% to $12.2 billion. Their stays totaled 99.1 million nights, marking a significant increase of 46.2%.
