The Chinese animated blockbuster Ne Zha 2 has taken Hong Kong by storm, reigning atop the city’s box office for four consecutive days. Since its release, the film has amassed over $2.07 million, cementing its status as 2025’s highest-grossing film in the region.
A sequel to the 2019 hit Ne Zha, the movie premiered in Hong Kong on February 18 before hitting theaters on February 22. Audiences have flocked to cinemas, drawn by its modern retelling of the legendary Ne Zha myth, stunning animation, and compelling narrative. The film, which debuted on the Chinese mainland during the Lunar New Year, has continued to captivate viewers across borders.
The Hong Kong premiere at Causeway Bay saw a star-studded turnout, including local cultural icons, industry representatives, and film enthusiasts. Critics and professionals have lauded the movie’s visual brilliance and storytelling depth, leading major cinemas—such as Festival Grand Cinema in Kowloon Tong—to schedule nearly hourly screenings to meet soaring demand.
Two Hong Kong moviegoers shared their excitement after attending early screenings. One resident remarked, “I don’t usually watch adult-oriented animated films, but this one is definitely worth watching. Chinese animation can now rival, or even surpass, foreign productions.” Another added, “Chinese animation keeps improving. Compared to films six years ago, the artwork is more beautiful, the visuals more vibrant, and the storytelling completely unexpected.”
LO Shuk-pui, Director of the Hong Kong SAR Government’s Culture, Sports, and Tourism Bureau, highlighted the film’s collaborative effort, stating, “The script is exceptionally well-written, with sharp dialogue and rich character development. I heard 138 companies worked on this project over five years—the dedication and technical excellence are evident.”
WONG Bak-ming, Chairman of Hong Kong’s Oriental Film Company, highlighted the cultural impact of the Ne Zha series, emphasizing its role in bringing traditional Chinese stories to a global audience. He underscored that the film’s success proves Chinese animation can achieve world-class recognition, marking a proud milestone for the industry.
On the global stage, Ne Zha 2 has shattered records, grossing over $1.698 billion as of February 18. This achievement propels it past Inside Out 2, making it the highest-grossing animated film in history and placing it among the top eight films of all time at the global box office.
Due to its unwavering popularity, its theatrical run in the Chinese mainland has been extended until March 30. From mythological roots to historic box office triumphs, Ne Zha 2 continues to redefine the landscape of Chinese animation, blending cultural heritage with worldwide appeal.
