Malta International Airport

Malta International Airport (MIA) has reported unprecedented passenger traffic for the year 2024, welcoming over 8.3 million travelers between January and November.

This milestone was marked by the airport reaching its 8 millionth passenger on November 12, 2024, a first in its operational history.

The 11-month performance reflects a 15% increase compared to the same period in the previous year, solidifying 2024 as MIA’s most successful year to date.

In response to the growing passenger numbers and to enhance service quality, MIA has embarked on a comprehensive investment program aimed at expanding and upgrading its facilities.

Key projects include:

Terminal Expansion: Launched in January 2020, this project involves a westward extension of the terminal building to improve passenger experience and operational efficiency.

The expansion focuses on critical areas such as the Check-in Hall, Security Screening Area, and departure gates. The introduction of new technologies is also planned to facilitate more seamless journeys and promote sustainable operations.

Apron X Construction: Scheduled for completion in 2024, Apron X will provide additional aircraft parking stands, addressing the increased demand and supporting the airport’s capacity to handle more flights.

VIP Terminal Development: Construction of a dedicated VIP terminal is set to commence, offering exclusive services and amenities to distinguished travelers.

SkyParks Business Centre 2: Plans are underway for SkyParks 2, an expansion of the existing business center, which will provide additional office and retail spaces, further enhancing the airport’s commercial offerings.

Sustainability Initiatives: MIA is committed to environmental sustainability, aiming to reach Level 3 of the Airport Carbon Accreditation Programme by 2024.

The installation of a photovoltaic system is among the initiatives to reduce the airport’s carbon footprint.

These developments are part of MIA’s strategic plan to accommodate future traffic growth and ensure a five-star experience for all guests.

By investing in infrastructure and sustainability, Malta International Airport is positioning itself to meet rising demands and contribute positively to the local economy.
