Maldivian to Launch Direct Flights from Maldives to Germany
The Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC/Visit Maldives) has confirmed that Maldivian, the country’s national airline, will begin direct flights from Male’s Velana International Airport (MLE) to Germany in October.
New Route to Enhance Connectivity and Tourism
This new direct route follows the delivery of Maldivian’s second A330-200 aircraft, offering greater convenience for German travelers seeking to visit the Maldives. The launch will cater to the growing demand for travel to the Maldives, strengthening cultural and economic ties between the two countries.
Existing Competition and Potential Partnerships
Currently, Condor, owned by Attestor, and Lufthansa Group’s Discover already operate weekly direct flights between Frankfurt and the Maldives. If Maldivian chooses Frankfurt as its gateway to Germany, the airline will likely need to enter into interline agreements with German carriers for connections to and from other major cities in Germany and neighboring countries. The flight schedule has yet to be released, but Maldivian is expected to operate twice-weekly services using an A330-200, which seats 270 passengers.
Alternative Route: Munich International Airport
Another potential option for Maldivian is Munich International Airport, which currently does not have any competing direct services to the Maldives. This could provide a strategic entry point for the airline into the German market.
Maldivian’s Expanding Network in China
Maldivian’s first A330-200 aircraft, delivered in January 2025, is already in use on flights to three major Chinese cities: Beijing, Chengdu, and Shanghai. Each of these cities is scheduled for one weekly flight—Shanghai on Mondays, Chengdu on Wednesdays, and Beijing on Thursdays.
Maldives Tourism Showcase at ITB Berlin 2025
The announcement of Maldivian’s new German route was made during the “Next Chapter of Maldives Tourism” seminar, hosted by MMPRC/Visit Maldives at ITB Berlin 2025. The seminar attracted global and German travel industry professionals and focused on key topics, including government tourism initiatives, sustainable practices, and strategic marketing.
MMPRC’s Strong Presence at ITB Berlin 2025
MMPRC’s delegation at ITB Berlin 2025 included 200 tourism stakeholders from 89 companies, further solidifying the Maldives as the leading holiday destination for German-speaking markets and global travelers.
