On the afternoon of March 15, 2025, Malaysia Airlines Flight MH705 experienced an emergency shortly after taking off from Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), prompting the aircraft to return to the airport. The Boeing 737-800, en route to Kuala Lumpur, was forced to turn back after one of its engines caught fire. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported among the 138 passengers.
The flight, which had taken off at 9:37 UTC, encountered trouble shortly after departure when the crew reported the engine fire. Acting swiftly, the flight crew decided to return to Manila, and the plane safely landed back at NAIA at 10:13 UTC. The incident was captured on social media, where passengers shared dramatic images of flames visible from the engine. One passenger praised the crew for their professional management of the emergency situation.
Another passenger described noticing unusual vibrations and a flickering of lights, but initially wasn’t aware of the fire. They confirmed the aircraft’s safe return to the airport, which helped reassure many onboard.
Aviation Updates Philippines, a local aviation news source, shared video footage of the left engine, which appeared to show flames and smoke. The outlet speculated that the issue might have been caused by a bird strike, although this has not been officially confirmed.
The aircraft involved in the incident, registered as 9M-MSB, is a 12-year-old Boeing 737-800 powered by CFM56 engines. Following the emergency, the plane has been grounded for inspection and further investigation. Malaysia Airlines has not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident.
A Pattern of Technical Issues at Malaysia Airlines
This incident is not the first technical issue to affect Malaysia Airlines recently. On June 20, 2024, Malaysia Airlines Flight MH199 had to make an emergency landing at Hyderabad Airport (HYD) after experiencing engine issues shortly after takeoff. The Boeing 737-800, also carrying 138 passengers, returned to the airport after sparks were observed coming from one of its engines. The aircraft, registered 9M-MXU, is still undergoing repairs.
Earlier in August 2024, Malaysia Airlines Flight MH128, a long-haul flight from Melbourne to Kuala Lumpur, was forced to make an emergency landing in Alice Springs after mid-flight engine problems arose. Additionally, on September 1, 2024, another Malaysia Airlines flight, bound for Seoul, had to return to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) after experiencing hydraulic system failure.
These incidents highlight a growing concern regarding the technical reliability of Malaysia Airlines’ fleet, which has raised questions about the airline’s maintenance protocols and its ability to prevent such issues in the future.
