Indian Railways is preparing to manage an unprecedented influx of pilgrims at Prayagraj for the final Amrit Snan of Maha Kumbh 2025, scheduled for February 26. Anticipating heavy crowds during Maha Sivaratri, the Railways will operate 350 special trains to accommodate pilgrims from various states, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Punjab, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh. The confluence at Sangam, where the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers meet, is expected to attract millions of devotees seeking to take a holy dip.
Over 63.36 crore pilgrims have visited the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj so far, with 1.11 crore recorded on February 25 alone. To ensure seamless travel for returning pilgrims, Indian Railways has stationed extra rakes near Prayagraj, ready for deployment as needed.
Uttar Pradesh Emerges As India’s Ultimate Destination For Travelers
Railways initially planned for 13,500 trains during the Maha Kumbh but have already operated over 15,000 trains, including a large number of special services. Stations in Bihar, such as Patna, Danapur, Muzaffarpur, and Darbhanga, saw high passenger volumes, while Uttar Pradesh stations like Gorakhpur, Lucknow, Varanasi, and Kanpur also witnessed massive crowds.
Similarly, Madhya Pradesh locations like Chitrakoot, Jabalpur, and Satna experienced increased footfall, with significant numbers traveling from Jharkhand hubs such as Dhanbad, Bokaro, and Ranchi.
To manage the anticipated rush post-Amrit Snan, North Central Railway, North Eastern Railway, and Northern Railway have intensified preparations. Railway officials and staff are on high alert to ensure crowd control and passenger safety.
Indian Railways’ proactive approach underscores the scale of Maha Kumbh 2025, reflecting its cultural and spiritual significance as millions gather at Prayagraj’s Sangam for the holy ritual.
