The Dr. António Agostinho Neto International Airport (AIAAN) in Luanda, Angola, is set to transform air connectivity and tourism across Southern Africa, providing expanded travel opportunities to lesser-visited destinations in the region.

As global air travel rebounds post-pandemic, new infrastructure projects like AIAAN are helping modernize aviation networks and enhance international accessibility. Though the airport officially opened in November 2022, passenger flights only commenced in late 2024, marking a new chapter in Angola’s air transport expansion.

Bridging the Gap in African Air Travel

According to the African Airlines Association, approximately 98 million passengers flew to Africa last year. However, air traffic remains concentrated in North Africa, which accounts for 40.4% of the continent’s total passenger volume.

AIAAN aims to shift this balance by positioning itself as a leading aviation hub for Southern Africa, enabling easier access for both international travelers and regional passengers.

By the end of March 2025, all domestic and international flights from Luanda’s existing Quatro de Fevereiro Airport will be relocated to AIAAN, further solidifying its role as Angola’s primary air transport gateway.

State-of-the-Art Infrastructure for Global Connectivity

Constructed by the China National Aero-technology International Engineering Corporation, the new airport features:

  • Two modern runways designed to accommodate large-capacity international flights.
  • Three terminal buildings spanning a 43-hectare site, built to enhance passenger experience.
  • A newly launched rail link, operational since November 2024, connecting AIAAN directly to downtown Luanda, ensuring seamless ground transport for travelers.

Once fully operational, the airport will have the capacity to handle 10 million international passengers and 5 million domestic travelers annually, significantly boosting tourism and business travel in Angola.

A Strategic Investment in Southern Africa’s Future

The opening of AIAAN aligns with broader efforts to modernize aviation infrastructure in Africa, supporting economic growth, increased connectivity, and an influx of global travelers eager to explore Southern Africa’s diverse landscapes and cultural heritage.

With its state-of-the-art facilities and enhanced connectivity, the airport is expected to play a vital role in the region’s tourism development, attracting more airlines, increasing direct flight options, and ultimately positioning Luanda as a major international transit hub.
