Louisiana Tourism, in collaboration with key partners, successfully wrapped up its inaugural promotional mission to India from September 23-27, 2024, visiting Mumbai and New Delhi. Spearheaded by Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser and Assistant Secretary of Tourism Doug Bourgeois, this mission was designed to boost awareness of Louisiana’s diverse tourism offerings among Indian travelers and media outlets. The delegation’s goal was to spotlight Louisiana as a premier travel destination, promoting its rich cultural heritage, world-famous cuisine, lively music scene, dynamic festivals, and exceptional outdoor adventures.

Key partners, including Visit Lake Charles, New Orleans & Company, and Mississippi River Country, joined the delegation to showcase Louisiana’s unique attractions. This effort aligns with Louisiana’s strategy to tap into the rapidly growing Indian travel market, which has seen a 35% increase in Indian visitors to the U.S. from January to July 2024, making India the second-largest overseas market for U.S. tourism. Supported by a U.S. Department of Commerce grant through the Market Development Cooperator Program, Louisiana is expanding its presence in India through strategic collaborations with U.S. Commercial Services and the U.S. Embassy.

Louisiana’s strategic location in the Southeastern U.S. enhances its appeal, with easy access from major cities such as New York, Chicago, and Houston. The Louis Armstrong International Airport in New Orleans offers convenient connections to key Indian cities, including Mumbai, Delhi, and Bangalore, making travel to the state seamless for Indian tourists eager to experience its Southern charm.

In 2024, Louisiana is celebrating the “Year of Music,” a campaign that highlights the state’s musical heritage as the birthplace of jazz, Cajun, and Zydeco music. This initiative aims to attract international visitors by showcasing Louisiana’s vibrant and unique musical culture, which continues to captivate audiences worldwide.

Looking ahead, Louisiana Tourism plans to build on the success of its India mission by launching a series of follow-up initiatives, including media collaborations, influencer partnerships, and travel trade events. These efforts will ensure that Louisiana remains top-of-mind for Indian travelers seeking authentic cultural experiences in the U.S. As the Indian travel market continues to expand, Louisiana is committed to fostering long-term growth and solidifying its position as a must-visit destination for Indian tourists.
