The Los Angeles – San Diego – San Luis Obispo (LOSSAN) Rail Corridor Agency has announced a significant new improvement for travelers on Southern California’s renowned coastal rail route. Starting June 16, 2025, the Amtrak® Pacific Surfliner® service will offer expanded daily roundtrips between Los Angeles and San Diego, providing greater flexibility, convenience, and enhanced options for both business and leisure passengers.

This move comes as a response to growing demand for more travel options along one of the busiest state-supported intercity rail routes in the country. The Pacific Surfliner will now introduce new afternoon and evening travel options to better accommodate a diverse range of travelers. These additional trains will offer a significant boost to the Pacific Surfliner’s existing schedule, filling key gaps and offering more convenient travel times.

The expanded schedule will feature two new roundtrip trains:

  • Southbound Train 582: This train will depart Los Angeles Union Station at 4:10 p.m., reaching its final destination at San Diego’s Santa Fe Depot by 7:04 p.m.
  • Northbound Train 593: This train will depart San Diego Santa Fe Depot at 8:10 p.m. and arrive at Los Angeles Union Station by 10:57 p.m.

These new trains provide crucial afternoon and evening travel options, especially for those with business commitments or those seeking to extend their time in either city. These additions also aim to make the Pacific Surfliner even more attractive for travelers seeking to enjoy the coastal beauty of California or those simply looking for a stress-free alternative to navigating the congested I-5 corridor.

The addition of these new trains is a key component of a broader initiative by the LOSSAN Rail Corridor Agency and its partners aimed at improving regional rail service and elevating the overall passenger experience. The service expansion represents the agency’s ongoing commitment to meeting the needs of its passengers and is seen as a milestone in the journey toward fully restoring service to the levels seen prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Prior to the pandemic, the Pacific Surfliner operated 13 daily roundtrips along the corridor. The recent expansion is a significant step in restoring those pre-pandemic service levels, which are vital for commuters, tourists, and businesses. The route is a key transportation artery for Southern California, helping to connect residents and visitors to popular destinations, both locally and across the region.

Alongside the new train options, the Pacific Surfliner continues to offer a range of amenities designed to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable journey. The trains are equipped with spacious reclining seats, power outlets, free Wi-Fi, bike and luggage racks, and a Market Café that serves a selection of food and beverages. Passengers can enjoy locally sourced California wines and craft beers, making the journey an extension of the Southern California experience.

Moreover, the Pacific Surfliner serves an extensive network of stations. The train route spans 351 miles, connecting 29 stations across six counties from San Diego to San Luis Obispo. This extensive reach provides easy access to some of California’s most popular and scenic destinations, including Santa Barbara, Goleta, San Luis Obispo, and the coastal areas of Ventura and Oxnard. It’s a route that highlights the natural beauty and vibrant culture of California, making it a top choice for those looking to travel in comfort and style.

In addition to the direct train service, Amtrak Thruway Bus Service offers guaranteed connections to extend travel options beyond the Pacific Surfliner’s direct routes. The bus service connects to key destinations such as Oakland, Solvang, Paso Robles, Indio, Palm Springs, and Fullerton. These connections help ensure that Pacific Surfliner passengers have even more options for continuing their journeys, whether heading north to the Bay Area or south to the Inland Empire.

The Pacific Surfliner route remains a cornerstone of Southern California’s public transportation system. By offering reliable, comfortable, and efficient service, it helps reduce congestion on major highways while promoting sustainable travel options. Whether traveling for business or leisure, the expanded schedule will make it easier for people to take advantage of the Pacific Surfliner’s unique combination of comfort, speed, and scenic views.

The expanded Pacific Surfliner schedule is another important step toward creating a comprehensive, modern rail network in California, one that serves the growing demands of travelers, supports regional economic growth, and provides a sustainable alternative to driving. It is a testament to the continued efforts of the LOSSAN Rail Corridor Agency to improve the region’s transportation infrastructure and provide passengers with the best possible experience.
