Las Vegas is set to make history by hosting a highly anticipated HBCU football showdown, bringing the legendary rivalry between Grambling State University and Jackson State University to the heart of the entertainment capital. The inaugural Las Vegas HBCU Classic—a first-of-its-kind event—will take place on October 25, 2025, at Allegiant Stadium, thanks to the partnership between the Las Vegas Raiders and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA).

More than just a game, this momentous event will honor the rich traditions, culture, and impact of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). It will serve as a platform to showcase the athletic prowess, spirit, and legacy of two of the most storied programs in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).

This epic showdown marks the 73rd meeting between Grambling State and Jackson State, reigniting a rivalry that has captivated fans for generations. Their last face-off on September 21, 2024, ended in a dominant 41-20 victory for Grambling State, adding even more intensity to this upcoming battle under the bright lights of Las Vegas.

With the Las Vegas HBCU Classic, the city continues to solidify itself as a premier destination for major sporting events. Fans can expect a weekend of high-energy football, cultural celebrations, and a powerful tribute to HBCU excellence, making this historic matchup one of the must-attend events of 2025.

“The Las Vegas Raiders and Allegiant Stadium are proud to host the HBCU Classic, celebrating the rich legacy, talent, and culture of Historically Black Colleges and Universities,” said Raiders President Sandra Douglass Morgan. “The Raiders organization has a deep and long-standing connection to HBCU football that dates to the early years of the franchise under Al Davis and includes three Pro Football Hall of Famers from HBCU programs, the first Black quarterback selected in the first round of the NFL Draft, the first Black head coach in modern NFL history, and dozens of outstanding players, coaches, and administrators. We eagerly anticipate the pride and passion of HBCU football visiting Las Vegas in October.”

The first Las Vegas HBCU Classic will extend far beyond the Allegiant Stadium playing field, showcasing two of college football’s most celebrated marching bands: Grambling’s “World Famed” Tiger Marching Band and Jackson State’s internationally renowned “Sonic Boom of the South.”

“We are proud to welcome Grambling and Jackson State to Las Vegas in October for this historic HBCU matchup,” said Steve Hill, president and CEO of the LVCVA.  “This game is more than just a competition—it’s a celebration of culture, tradition, and community that resonates far beyond the field. We look forward to showcasing the excitement and hospitality Las Vegas has to offer to the teams, alumni, and fans.”

Grambling State and Jackson State Return to Las Vegas for Historic HBCU Clash

The Las Vegas HBCU Classic marks a significant return to the city for both Grambling State University and Jackson State University, two programs with a deep history in college football. This will be Grambling’s second time competing in Las Vegas, having last played at Sam Boyd Stadium in 2002 against Tennessee State. The “World Famed” Tiger Marching Band has also made its mark in the city, delivering a thrilling halftime performance during a Las Vegas Raiders game in the 2021 season.

For Jackson State, this marks its third visit to Las Vegas, following matchups against UNLV in 1975 and 2016. The city also holds a special place in HBCU football history, as it was the site of one of the sport’s most shocking upsets—when Howard University stunned UNLV on September 2, 2017, defying the odds in a game still talked about today.

Fans eager to be part of this historic event can secure their spots early, with presales for tickets and exclusive fan experience travel packages launching on March 3. The public on-sale begins March 7, offering a chance to experience not only the thrilling matchup but also the energy and excitement of Las Vegas.
