Lanzarote is set to host “Epicentro Lanzarote,” a two-day event on February 13-14, 2025, at Jameos del Agua, focusing on sustainable tourism practices.

This initiative is a collaboration between the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), the Lanzarote Society for External Promotion (SPEL – Turismo Lanzarote), and the UN Global Compact Spain.

Event Objectives and Agenda

The event aims to equip key stakeholders in Lanzarote’s tourism sector with practical tools and showcase best practices for sustainability.

The opening session will feature Héctor Fernández, CEO of SPEL – Turismo Lanzarote, GSTC Chair Luigi Cabrini, and Silvia Rial, Corporate and Sectoral Sustainability Manager at the UN Global Compact Spain.

They will discuss the significance of collaborative efforts in advancing sustainable tourism.

Following the opening, GSTC Trainer Natalia Naranjo will lead a session introducing the GSTC Criteria, providing practical insights and real-world examples to help participants understand and apply these global standards in travel and tourism.

On the second day, attendees will participate in workshops, dividing into groups to discuss solutions for sustainable tourism practices in Lanzarote, building upon the knowledge gained from the previous day’s training.

The event will conclude with a summary of key takeaways and a networking lunch.

Lanzarote’s Commitment to Sustainability

Recognized for its unique volcanic landscapes and environmental conservation efforts, Lanzarote was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1993.

In 2012, it became an ‘Early Adopter’ of the GSTC Destination Criteria, further solidifying its dedication to sustainable tourism.

The “Epicentro Lanzarote” event also marks the 30th anniversary of the signing of the first Charter for Responsible Tourism in Lanzarote in 1995, reflecting the island’s long-standing commitment to responsible tourism practices.
