Kolkata Airport is leading India’s digital travel revolution, experiencing a fourfold surge in DigiYatra adoption since January 2024. With over 6,500 daily users—expected to cross 10,000 soon—Kolkata has set the benchmark for seamless, contactless air travel. As India embraces biometric-based airport entry, major hubs like Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru airports are also witnessing a sharp increase in DigiYatra adoption, reinforcing the shift toward a faster, more efficient digital travel experience across the country.
India’s Digital Travel Revolution: DigiYatra’s Soaring Success Across Major Airports
India’s air travel experience is undergoing a massive digital transformation, with DigiYatra surpassing 10 million app downloads. The facial recognition-based system is rapidly becoming the preferred mode of airport passage, offering a seamless, contactless experience. Airports across the country, including Kolkata, Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and others, have witnessed a sharp rise in DigiYatra adoption, making air travel faster and more efficient than ever before.
Kolkata Airport: A Fourfold Increase in DigiYatra Users
Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport has seen an extraordinary rise in DigiYatra adoption. Since January 2024, the number of passengers using the app has quadrupled, with over 6,500 travelers now relying on the system daily. Officials expect this number to exceed 10,000 per day once DigiYatra gates for domestic transit transfers become operational in the coming months.
Previously, a significant percentage of passengers—around 85%-86%—used DigiYatra kiosks rather than the app. However, by October 2023, the trend had shifted, with app users equaling kiosk users at 50-50. The transition accelerated further after temporary disruptions in kiosk operations, leading to a doubling of app users. Even after kiosk services resumed, 83%-84% of departing DigiYatra users at Kolkata Airport now prefer the app over the traditional method.
Mumbai Airport: 300,000 DigiYatra Uses Recorded
Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport has also recorded substantial DigiYatra adoption. Since its launch in August 2023, the airport has logged approximately 300,000 app uses as of February 11, 2024. The steady rise in usage reflects growing passenger confidence in the facial recognition-based check-in system, eliminating the need for physical boarding passes and long queues.
Delhi and Bengaluru Airports: Leading the Way in Digital Adoption
Among the busiest airports in the country, Delhi and Bengaluru were early adopters of DigiYatra, having launched the system in December 2022. Since then, both airports have led the way in user adoption, with thousands of passengers utilizing the app daily.
Delhi Airport, as India’s busiest aviation hub, has seen continuous growth in app users, reducing entry clearance times and easing congestion at security checkpoints. Bengaluru Airport, a leader in technology-driven passenger experiences, has also embraced DigiYatra, ensuring a swift and hassle-free travel experience for its users.
Hyderabad, Pune, and Ahmedabad Airports See Steady Growth
Apart from the metro hubs, Hyderabad, Pune, and Ahmedabad airports have also shown consistent DigiYatra adoption since their respective launches in April and August 2023. Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport and Pune’s Lohegaon Airport have reported steady increases in app usage, proving that passengers prefer the contactless check-in system over traditional methods. Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, another key travel hub, has also experienced a noticeable rise in DigiYatra users.
DigiYatra’s Nationwide Impact: Over 10 Million Downloads and Counting
Since its launch in December 2022, DigiYatra has revolutionized air travel across 24 airports in India, with plans to expand to 29 airports soon. The platform has already facilitated over 45 million seamless journeys, eliminating long queues and reducing security clearance times from 15 seconds to just 5 seconds.
DigiYatra’s daily adoption rate stands at a staggering 30,000 downloads per day, indicating strong user demand and confidence in the technology. The app’s Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) system ensures that users retain control over their personal data, further enhancing privacy and security.
What’s Next for DigiYatra? Expansion Plans for 2025
As DigiYatra continues its rapid expansion, several exciting developments are planned for 2025:
- International Integration: DigiYatra is preparing to integrate with global airport systems, allowing foreign travelers with e-passports to experience seamless travel in India.
- Multilingual Support: The app will soon support all 22 official Indian languages, ensuring accessibility for a wider range of travelers.
- IATA Partnership: DigiYatra is collaborating with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to align with the IATA One-ID initiative, bringing global recognition to the system.
The Future of Air Travel is Digital
DigiYatra’s exponential growth at airports like Kolkata, Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and beyond is a testament to its efficiency, convenience, and security. By eliminating paperwork, reducing wait times, and ensuring a smoother airport experience, DigiYatra is reshaping the future of Indian aviation.
With the system set to expand further, millions more passengers are expected to embrace contactless, tech-driven travel, making air travel faster, smarter, and more passenger-friendly than ever before.
