Karnataka Tourism wrapped up an immensely successful showing at the Tourism Expo Japan (JATA), held from September 26 to 29, 2024, at Tokyo Big Sight. This participation marked a major milestone in showcasing Karnataka’s tourism potential to an international audience. The Karnataka Pavilion was inaugurated by Mr. R Madhu Sudan, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Indian Embassy in Tokyo, Japan, and later received a visit from His Excellency, Mr. Sebi George, Indian Ambassador to Japan, along with Mr. Kuniharu Ebina, President of the Japan Association of Travel Agents (JATA), highlighting the significance of Karnataka’s presence at the event.
The Karnataka Pavilion, which spotlighted the state’s rich tourism assets—from UNESCO World Heritage Sites to its scenic beaches and the verdant Western Ghats—drew significant interest from travel trade professionals, media, and potential travelers. A delegation led by Ms. Salma Fahim IAS, Secretary of Tourism for the Government of Karnataka, Mr. Janardhan HP, Joint Director of the Department of Tourism, Mr. Prashant Shankhinamath, IFS, Managing Director of Jungle Lodges and Resorts, and Mr. Shivaputra, PS to the Hon’ble Minister, conducted numerous B2B meetings and formed strategic partnerships with Japanese travel agencies and tour operators.
Visitors were enthralled by Karnataka’s vibrant cultural heritage, diverse art forms, and eco-tourism offerings. Destinations like Hampi, Badami, and Pattadakal, known for their ancient temples, caught the eye, as did emerging hotspots such as Coorg, Chikmagalur, and Mangalore, noted for their eco-friendly tourism and adventure experiences.
Karnataka’s involvement in the Tourism Expo Japan 2024 underscored the state’s dedication to promoting responsible and sustainable tourism. The pavilion featured distinctive experiences such as spiritual tourism, wildlife sanctuaries, and cultural tours, with a special focus on the state’s Buddhist trail, including the peaceful retreats and historical sites at Sannati and Banavasi.
In addition to its heritage and natural beauty, Karnataka Tourism promoted a wide range of activities like trekking, coffee plantation tours, and wellness retreats. The pavilion positioned Karnataka as a destination for year-round adventure, spirituality, and cultural exploration. Visitors could also embark on a virtual reality tour showcasing the state’s stunning landscapes and cultural landmarks, further deepening their connection to Karnataka’s attractions.
The Expo offered a valuable platform for Karnataka Tourism to forge stronger ties with Japan’s travel sector. Many Japanese tour operators expressed interest in developing curated travel packages to Karnataka, focusing on eco-tourism and cultural heritage. The enthusiastic response from Japanese travelers reinforced Karnataka’s appeal as a unique destination blending tradition with modern experiences.
Karnataka Tourism’s participation at Tourism Expo Japan (JATA) 2024 significantly increased the state’s visibility in the Japanese market and laid the foundation for future collaborations to enhance international tourism opportunities.
