United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has issued an important message on World Tourism Day 2024, which highlights the theme, “Tourism and Peace.” Guterres emphasized that tourism has the ability to unite people, strengthen communities, and promote inclusivity, all while fostering peace. In his statement, Guterres noted, “Sustainable tourism can transform communities by creating jobs, fostering inclusion, and strengthening local economies. By preserving cultural and natural heritage, it can help reduce tensions and nurture peaceful coexistence.”

He underscored the role tourism plays in building economic interdependence between countries, encouraging peaceful collaboration, and contributing to development. He also highlighted the power of each traveler to act as an ambassador for peace by engaging with respect, embracing diversity, and celebrating shared humanity. As global citizens celebrate tourism’s potential, Guterres called for responsible travel that bridges divides and nurtures mutual respect. “Together, we can harness the power of tourism to advance peace and prosperity for all,” Guterres stated.

World Tourism Day, first celebrated in 1980, marks the anniversary of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO, now known as UN Tourism), which was established in 1975. The day emphasizes tourism’s critical contribution to global economic development, cross-cultural exchange, and peacebuilding. This year’s theme, “Tourism and Peace,” encourages reflection on how travel can be a force for understanding, unity, and sustainability.

The World Committee on Tourism Ethics (WCTE) welcomed the focus on “Tourism and Peace” for 2024, acknowledging its importance in a world divided by conflict. The Committee reaffirmed that tourism is a vital catalyst for peace, fostering global understanding and friendship. In alignment with Guterres’ statement, the Committee emphasized that “building peace is a conscious and bold act” and called for global cooperation to support peacebuilding efforts in conflict-affected areas. The WCTE also stressed the need for adherence to the UN Tourism Global Code of Ethics, urging the global community to uphold the principles of the United Nations Charter in advancing peace through tourism.
