Japan Airlines

Japan Airlines (JAL) has partnered with Lime, a prominent micromobility provider, to enhance last-mile mobility solutions across Japan. This collaboration aims to grow Lime’s port network in Japanese cities, offering communities more sustainable and convenient travel options. Lime anticipates that its partnership with JAL will accelerate its growth and increase brand recognition in Japan, benefiting users with both standing and seated e-scooters.

The collaboration responds to rising urban congestion and limited transportation alternatives, especially in regional cities facing depopulation and aging demographics. By expanding shared, lightweight electric vehicles, JAL and Lime aim to ease car traffic, alleviate crowding on public transportation, improve air quality, and minimize the need for private car storage.

As part of its JAL VISION 2030 initiative, Japan Airlines is transitioning beyond traditional airline services to engage in Mobility as a Service (MaaS). The goal is to enhance and preserve local transport options, fostering stronger connections across regions.

Lime introduced its services in Japan on August 19, 2024, to promote electric micromobility as an eco-friendly public transit option, aligning with the vision of a carbon-neutral future. This partnership with JAL aims to make intra-regional travel more accessible for both locals and visitors.

Partnership Highlights

  1. Mileage Collaboration: For the first time in Japan, travelers can earn JAL miles with an electric micromobility provider, receiving 1 mile per 100 yen (excluding tax) spent on Lime.
  2. Port Network Expansion: JAL supports Lime’s port development in Tokyo and other cities. Lime’s Okinawa service, launching on November 7, marks the first port installation linked with JAL, featuring 40 ports and 180 e-scooters in Naha City.
  3. Short-Term Rental Development: JAL and Lime will also establish rental services for municipalities, businesses, and tourist destinations, marking Lime’s first destination-specific business in Japan.

From Streets to Skies

This collaboration marks Japan’s first partnership between an airline and an electric micromobility company, offering JAL members a new way to earn miles on Lime rides. Two promotions accompany the launch, running through December 31, 2024:

  • Lime x JAL First-Time Use Campaign: New users who register their JAL membership in the Lime app earn 100 bonus miles on their first ride, plus standard mileage.
  • Double Miles Campaign: Registered members earn double the usual miles when using Lime services.

JAL’s Role in Lime’s Port Installation

Lime’s e-scooter ports enable easy vehicle access and parking. JAL will assist Lime in expanding these ports across its operational areas, especially in tourist hotspots. On November 7, 2024, Lime will debut its services in Naha City, Okinawa, featuring seated e-scooters—a unique offering among micromobility providers in Japan.

Linking JAL miles can be done as follows:

  • The Lime app must first be downloaded by riders. From the top screen, “Promotions” in the left menu bar should be accessed, followed by selecting “Partnership Rewards.”
  • The JAL mileage number can then be entered to complete the linking process.
