Italy's
Orbetello

Italy’s iconic seaside village of Orbetello is overwhelmed by a midge swarm, forcing residents to urgently call for emergency measures to address the crisis.

Residents of a quaint seaside village in Italy have urgently called for a state of emergency as the local community and tourists struggle to open their windows. For the past three weeks, Orbetello, located in southern Tuscany, has been overwhelmed by an invasion of midges, making it nearly impossible for people to venture outside.

Local fishermen suspect the midge infestation is linked to a decline in fry, which are the primary predators of midge larvae. They believe this decline is caused by lower oxygen levels in the coastal waters. The village’s location on a peninsula also limits the exchange of water between the lagoon and the Tyrrhenian Sea, exacerbating the situation.

In response to the crisis, residents have called for an immediate commissioner to be appointed with the authority to address the emergency and manage the Orbetello Lagoon in a sustainable manner. This measure would fill the operational gap until a Lagoon Consortium is established.
