Indonesia topped the list of the most popular international destinations for Australian travelers in 2024, experiencing remarkable growth in both travel insurance sales and claims, as reported by 1Cover Travel Insurance.
Policy sales to Indonesia surged by 25% compared to the previous year, and were 50% higher than the figures seen before the pandemic. Bali remained the key attraction, drawing the bulk of Australian tourists to the region.
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, nearly 135,000 Australians visited Indonesia in November 2024 alone, securing its position as the most visited overseas destination that month, surpassing Japan and Thailand.
Travel insurance claims related to Indonesia saw a significant spike in 2024, in line with the rise in visits. 1Cover reported a 40% increase in claims compared to the previous year.
A large portion of these claims were due to medical incidents, including illnesses and accidents, particularly those involving scooters. Foodborne illnesses and road traffic accidents were identified as the leading causes behind these medical claims.
One of 1Cover’s most expensive claims in 2024 came from a traveler in Lombok who fell gravely ill, requiring intubation and air evacuation. The claim amounted to over $287,000.
Natural disasters have also affected travel in the region. In November 2024, the eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki led to significant flight cancellations from Bali, causing major disruptions to travel plans for many.
