IndiGo is gearing up for a significant expansion into the long-haul market, setting its sights on Europe as it strengthens its international presence. The airline has submitted a request for daily flight slots at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport (AMS) from both Mumbai (BOM) and Delhi (DEL) for the upcoming summer schedule, marking a bold step toward establishing direct connectivity to the European continent.

To facilitate this ambitious growth, IndiGo is set to receive its first Airbus A321XLR aircraft later this year, allowing for longer-range operations with enhanced fuel efficiency. Further reinforcing its expansion strategy, the airline has lined up the arrival of Airbus A350s starting in 2027, equipping its fleet with advanced wide-body aircraft capable of serving intercontinental routes efficiently.

As part of its immediate plans, IndiGo will wet lease six Boeing 787 Dreamliners from Norse Atlantic Airways, with the first two aircraft arriving in March 2025. Initially, these wide-body jets are expected to operate on high-demand regional routes such as Bangkok (BKK) and Singapore (SIN) before being deployed on European services. This move signals IndiGo’s growing commitment to entering long-haul markets with competitive offerings.

IndiGo currently operates international routes to destinations including Baku, Istanbul, and Tbilisi, while leveraging an extensive codeshare agreement with Turkish Airlines (TK) to provide access to over 30 European cities. As the airline faces increasing competition from global giants such as Air India, Emirates, and Etihad, it is actively exploring strategic partnerships to enhance its European footprint.

One of the key areas of potential growth includes deepening ties with Air France-KLM and Virgin Atlantic, which could provide valuable slot access, seamless passenger transfers, and expanded cargo opportunities. Air France-KLM already offers IndiGo passengers connections to 30 cities across India, and strengthening this alliance could further boost the airline’s presence in Europe.

With a strong focus on fleet expansion, strategic partnerships, and direct connectivity to key European hubs, IndiGo is poised to make a major impact in the international aviation market. As it transitions from a primarily regional carrier to a player in the long-haul segment, the airline is positioning itself as a serious contender on global routes, bringing greater connectivity between India and Europe.
