Indian tourism has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past decade, shifting from the need for a brand ambassador to a period where we celebrate having a leader who serves as Incredible India’s most prominent global champion. This evolution is not merely symbolic; it reflects substantial progress in enhancing India’s global tourism presence.

The Hon’ble Prime Minister emphasizes a “Whole-of-Government” approach to promote comprehensive growth in tourism. With the establishment of approximately 150,000 kilometers of road networks, nearly 500 new air routes, and around 150 airports enhancing air connectivity, alongside the introduction of high-speed Vande Bharat trains and the completion of approximately 100 tourism infrastructure projects, India achieved an impressive 250 crore domestic tourist visits (DTV) in 2023—almost double the 128 crore DTV recorded in 2014.

The Prime Minister’s vision ensures that tourism offerings at all 60 destinations that hosted India’s G20 meetings gain global visibility under the Presidency. As a leader deeply connected with the people, he has inspired the initiative Dekho Apna Desh, encouraging citizens to explore and appreciate the beauty of Bharat before traveling abroad. He consistently urges the global Indian diaspora to act as ambassadors for Incredible India, fostering awareness of the country among their international friends. His visits to iconic locations such as Lakshadweep, Kaziranga, Kanyakumari, and Srinagar have generated significant interest among both domestic and international tourists.

Reflecting on the Prime Minister’s commitment to tourism, I recall his heartfelt words when he appointed me to the Tourism portfolio in his Cabinet—he expressed that he was giving me a piece of his heart. Since that moment, I have made it my mission to develop a comprehensive business plan for the tourism sector in India.

A key focus of this business plan is the creation of new tourism destinations, leveraging the rapid advancements in infrastructure. From India’s independence in 1947 to 2014, there was no successful model for developing a tourist destination from scratch in a holistic way. This paradigm shifted in 2018 with the launch of Ekta Nagar and the Statue of Unity, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of Indian tourism.
