India is revolutionizing rail travel with solar-powered trains and stations, showcasing innovation, sustainability, and a bold step toward a greener future.
Indian Railways is not just a transportation network; it embodies the spirit of India’s unity, progress, and cultural richness. From its historical roots to its modern strides, Indian Railways continues to adapt to the evolving needs of the nation.
In a groundbreaking step toward sustainability, Indian Railways has introduced solar-powered trains equipped with rooftop solar panels to generate electricity. This initiative aims to reduce carbon emissions and promote environmental conservation.
The journey of solar-powered trains in India began on July 14, 2017, with the launch of the first solar-powered DEMU (Diesel Electric Multiple Unit) train at Safdarjung Railway Station in Delhi. This train, running between Sarai Rohilla in Delhi and Farukh Nagar in Haryana, features six coaches fitted with a total of 16 solar panels, each producing around 300 Wp.
In another remarkable development, 2020 saw the inauguration of a solar-powered miniature train in Veli, Kerala. This eco-friendly miniature rail system, complete with a ticket counter, tunnel, and station, accommodates up to 45 passengers per bogie and runs on a 2.5 km track. It showcases Indian Railways’ innovative approach to clean energy solutions.
As part of its long-term sustainability goals, Indian Railways is working to solidify its position as one of the country’s largest clean energy adopters. Solar panels installed on train roofs generate approximately 17 units of electricity daily, powering onboard lighting systems. Currently, these panels are being deployed on non-AC coaches, with plans to expand further.
In addition to trains, India’s first fully solar-powered railway station was established in Guwahati in 2017, furthering the nation’s efforts to reduce dependence on traditional, polluting energy sources.
Despite challenges, Indian Railways remains committed to introducing more solar-powered coaches, with urban areas likely to see these innovations first. This shift toward sustainable transportation underscores Indian Railways’ vision of a cleaner and greener future for the country.
