Tourism Authority of Thailand

On March 18, 2025, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) celebrates its remarkable 65-year journey, marking over six decades of dedication to establishing Thailand as one of the world’s top tourist destinations. Through unwavering efforts, TAT has evolved from a small tourism office into a globally recognized leader in sustainable tourism, blending economic growth with environmental responsibility, cultural preservation, and community-driven development.

The Journey of TAT: From Inception to Global Leadership

The story of tourism in Thailand began in 1924, when Field Marshal Prince Krom Phra Kampaengphet Akrayothin, as Commander of the State Railway of Thailand, took the first steps in promoting Thailand internationally. In 1936, Thailand’s Ministry of Economic Affairs introduced its first national tourism development plan. However, World War II delayed these efforts.

In the 1950s, the government recognized the growing potential of tourism and revived its efforts by creating a structured tourism strategy. By 1960, the Tourist Organization of Thailand (TOT) was founded on March 18, under the guidance of Prime Minister Field Marshal Sarit Thanarat, laying the groundwork for what would become a national tourism powerhouse.

By 1979, the rapid growth of the tourism sector led to the reorganization of TOT into the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). This shift included a greater focus on domestic tourism, regulatory oversight, and sustainable practices. Over time, TAT’s responsibilities expanded, making it a crucial player in Thailand’s tourism policy, contributing significantly to the nation’s economy.

TAT’s official emblem, introduced in 1963, symbolizes Thailand’s cultural richness and global outreach. It features the iconic Phra Prang of Wat Arun, representing Thai heritage, an airplane to signify international tourism, and the Royal Barge Suphannahong, an emblem of Thailand’s deep-rooted traditions.

TAT’s Transformative Role in Shaping Thailand’s Tourism Landscape

Since its formation, TAT has been instrumental in propelling Thailand to global prominence. In its inaugural year, Thailand attracted 81,340 visitors, setting the stage for decades of growth. By the 1970s, the country welcomed more than one million tourists, prompting large-scale promotional campaigns.

The 1980s and 1990s saw Thailand’s tourism campaign rise to international fame with iconic slogans such as “Land of a Thousand Smiles” and “Amazing Thailand,” which solidified the nation’s image as a top tourist destination. In 1980, TAT launched the Thailand Tourism Festival (TTF), encouraging domestic tourism, and in the 1990s, the Thailand Tourism Awards were introduced to recognize sustainable tourism practices.

By the early 2000s, Thailand had crossed the threshold of 10 million visitors, with the Unseen Thailand campaign unveiling hidden gems throughout the country. In 2008, TAT launched the “7 Greens” initiative, championing eco-tourism and promoting sustainability. In 2001, the Thailand Travel Mart Plus (TTM+) was established, becoming one of Asia-Pacific’s most significant travel trade events.

The 2010s were marked by exponential growth, as Thailand attracted 37 million visitors in 2018 and 39 million in 2019. Campaigns like “Discover Thainess” and “Open to the New Shades” aimed to diversify experiences, catering to both first-time travelers and loyal visitors. Thailand’s tourism industry solidified its place on the global map.

Adapting to Challenges and Rebuilding After the Pandemic

The 2020s brought unprecedented challenges as the COVID-19 pandemic devastated global travel. TAT responded swiftly by launching the SHA (Amazing Thailand Safety & Health Administration) certification program to ensure safety and hygiene standards across the tourism sector. In 2021, Thailand led the way with the Phuket Sandbox and Samui Plus programs, allowing international tourists to visit safely.

The “WAIT NO MORE” campaign was launched in response to the pandemic, helping Thailand regain its momentum. In 2022, the Visit Thailand Year 2022-2023: Amazing New Chapters campaign was launched, showcasing fresh and diverse travel experiences, including ecotourism, cultural exploration, and adventure tourism.

Sustainability at the Core of Thailand’s Tourism Vision

TAT’s leadership extends beyond traditional tourism growth; sustainability has become a cornerstone of its strategy. Over the years, TAT has pioneered several key initiatives to promote responsible tourism:

  • Thailand Tourism Awards: Since 1996, these prestigious awards have recognized tourism businesses that embody sustainable practices, promoting excellence in the industry.
  • 7Greens Initiative: Launched in 2008, this program encourages sustainable tourism by fostering collaboration with businesses, communities, and travelers, focusing on environmental awareness and green tourism solutions.
  • SHA Certification: Introduced in 2020 to raise hygiene and safety standards, SHA certification supports tourism businesses in meeting the highest health standards.
  • Sustainable Tourism Goals (STGs): In 2023, TAT introduced the STGs, aligning with Thailand’s long-term national strategy and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These 17 objectives aim to improve tourism sustainability by focusing on environmental, economic, and social responsibility.
  • STAR Initiative: Launched in 2023, the Sustainable Tourism Acceleration Rating (STAR) evaluates businesses based on governance, socio-economic impact, cultural preservation, and environmental responsibility.

Looking to the Future: TAT’s Vision for 2025 and Beyond

As TAT celebrates 65 years of excellence, it remains committed to sustainability, responsible tourism, and creating high-value experiences for visitors. For 2025, TAT’s goals include generating 3.4 trillion Baht in tourism revenue, with 39 million international arrivals and 205 million domestic trips.

Thailand’s tourism future is focused on further strengthening its position as a leader in sustainable tourism. Through continued innovation and responsible growth, TAT will continue to shape the future of global tourism, ensuring that Thailand remains a top destination for years to come.

TAT’s commitment to inclusivity, innovation, and environmental stewardship will ensure that Thailand remains at the forefront of global tourism, offering visitors the chance to explore, experience, and immerse themselves in one of the world’s most diverse and vibrant destinations.
